He points to the foxes, and says, "The Calis have always been my favorite. They seem like the most possible and were among the first ones that came here. I'm not sure why all these creatures came to this specific clearing, but I'm glad they did. Without them, it would be extremely lonely out here. They give me someone to talk to, someone who I know won't judge me – for anything. They don't depend on me, but I depend on them." He gestures towards one of the birds, one with fiery plumage, scarlet, gold, orange, and yellow, even a tinge of blood red. "Any idea what she is?"

I nod slowly, awed at the sight of a creature I have heard hundreds of stories about. "A phoenix?" He nods, seemingly proud that I know one of his creatures. "Are they... are they why you live out here, all alone?"

He hesitates for only a moment before nodding, but I still see the smile fade from his features. I tilt my head, trying to figure out what's wrong. He shudders slightly before he seems to come back from where ever his mind had taken him. The life seems to return to his eyes, but the joy does not.

"If you don't mind me asking, why do you live out here, all alone? You don't have to answer, if you don't want to."

He shakes his head slightly, muttering to himself, but low enough that only he can understand, not me. He then nods, seemingly coming to a decision. "You told me your story, so it is only fair that I tell you mine."
