SHAY’S POV

I step into the shower and can’t get Sam or Jack out of my mind. Even though I’m technically single, I feel like I’m cheating on both of them. What if they are friends? What if neither of them actually like me? What if this is all just a big practical joke? I shudder at the mere thought that none of it means anything to either of them.

I try to clear my head. Thank goodness tomorrow is the last day of school before spring break. Although I’ve only attended Westside for two full days, I already need a break. I turn off the water and step out of the shower, wrapping a towel around my naked body.

My mind is running marathons and I keep reliving the past three days. I develop a headache so I shut my eyes and drift to sleep.

*The next day after school*

School was a little less boring today. Everyone was a lot happier because it was the last school day before spring break. Spring break lasts two weeks long and I can’t be more excited. Sam drove me to school again today and Jack sat next to me in Calculus. Butterflies form in my stomach whenever I talk to either of them and it troubles me to no end.

It’s been three hours since spring break officially started and I haven’t done anything productive. I feel a buzz and I unlock my phone. I read a text from Katie, “Party tonight at my place! Wanna help me set up?” I respond instantly, “Definitely! Be there in 10.” She sends me her address and I grab my car keys.

I arrive shortly at her house and ring her doorbell. She answers excitedly, but her face drops upon seeing me.

"Shay, you can’t wear that to a party!"

I look down and survey myself. I’m wearing a baggy sweatshirt and leggings. “Why not? I’m going for the sexy grunge look.” I look at her seriously and she doesn’t know how to respond. I burst into laughter and say, “Katie, I’m kidding. Can I borrow something of yours?”

She giggles and leads me into her room. She points to her closet and lays down on her bed, “Go crazy.”

I walk into her closet and I’m overwhelmed. I eagerly dig through her endless amount of garments and choose leather leggings with a loose top that showed off some cleavage. I step out of her closet and pose like a model, “Is this better?”

Her eyes move from her phone to me. She smiles slyly and says, “Much. You look hot.”

I giggle and we walk downstairs into her huge basement together. We set up the bar counter with all kinds of soda and red solo cups. We fill her fridge with endless cans of beers and an assortment of liquor. I dim the lights to the optimal lighting and Katie hangs up Christmas lights in the main area of her basement. Afterwards, we lay on her couch exhausted.

Just then, we hear the door bell ring and chatter we can’t make out. Katie rushes to the door and let’s the people pour into the basement. I stand by the bar and pour myself a drink, greeting everyone and having small talk.

I feel the alcohol course through my body as I pour myself another drink. I see people of all grades from my school dancing in the middle and hooking up in the corners.

I see Katie sitting on the couch with her legs on top of a cute blonde’s lap. She catches my eye and motions for me to come over. Drink in my hand, I walk over to the couch and sit on the other side of the blonde boy.

"Jack, this is Shay. Shay, this is Jack." She says sloppily in her drunk stupor.

Just then, we hear a crash and Katie bolts up, “What the fuck was that?!” She instantly gets up and scurries toward the noise.
