SHAY'S POV
I lay down on my bed and sigh. It feels so damn good to be finally done packing and setting up my new room. I still can't believe I actually moved. To a different state. I'd lived in Florida since the day I was born, 17 years to be exact. What's in Nebraska anyways? There's no beach around or anything. I'm in the middle of freaking nowhere.
Tomorrow's my first day at my new high school. It's the middle of the year and everyone already has friend groups established, so I don't really expect much out of this year. I just plan on focusing on my schoolwork so I can get into a good college in Florida and reunite with all my friends, just like we planned.
"SHAY! CAN YOU RUN AND GET SOME MILK AND SUGAR FROM THE GROCERY STORE?" My mom shouts up the stairs so I could hear.
"YEAH," I shout back. I grab my car keys and drive to the local grocery store, the only place I know how to get to from my new house. I park my car near the back of the parking lot and walk inside. The familiar cold air of a grocery store hits me and I walk around the store searching for the dairy section. I wander around and find myself in the cookie and candy section. I'm scanning the shelves for some party cake Oreos, when I accidentally bump into a tall, beautifully tan boy.
"Oh my god, I am so sorry. I wasn't paying attention." I stammer, trying to avoid eye contact.
He chuckles and says, "Don't worry about it."
I do a small smile and start to walk away. Screw the Oreos.
"Were you looking for these?" The stranger calls after me, holding up a package of party cake Oreos.
I stop midway and turn around. I recognize the label and walk back towards him. "Yeah! How'd you know?" He hands the package to me and says, "You were mumbling 'party cake Oreos' the entire time you were in this aisle."
I put my hand on my face in embarrassment and he laughs. Smiling, he says, "I'm Jack." He holds out his hand and I shake it willingly.
"I'm Shay." I say, unfortunately letting go of his hand.
"Shay. So Shay, where do you go to school?"
"My family and I just moved here from Florida. So tomorrow I start school at uh, Westside High?"
"No way! That's where I go. What grade are you in?"
"I'm a junior."
"Nice, nice. I'm a senior, so don't mess with me." He says with a smirk.
I throw my hands up in surrender on either side of my head and say, "I mean no harm."
He laughs and I can't help but notice his perfect, white teeth. I catch myself staring at him and to my horror, he's staring back. "Uh, so it was nice meeting you." I ran my fingers through my hair and continue, "Maybe I'll see you around school or something. Thanks for the Oreos." I say awkwardly and begin to walk away.
"Yeah, no problem." I hear him say as I walk away. God, he was sexy.
I grab the milk and sugar and check out. On the drive home, I can't seem to get Jack out of my head. His hair, his eyes, his hands, his smile... Stop. I catch myself. I'm not going to let myself obsess over some guy who I'll probably never talk to again.
With my thoughts racing, I forgot to pay attention to where I was going. I stop at a stoplight and look out of either window. Nothing looks familiar. Realizing I'm completely lost, I sigh and turn into the nearest gas station. I park my car at a pump and walk into the store, hoping the cashier knows how the hell I get home.
The door rang as I walked in. I stand in line behind one other customer and I wait. The customer seems to be arguing with the employee and I sigh again.
"Everything okay?" I hear a voice behind me and I jump around suddenly.
I turn around to see a boy with long eyelashes, perfect teeth and light brown hair. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." He laughs. "You just seem upset."
I fake a chuckle and respond, "It's okay, I just didn't notice you come behind me. I'm fine. I mean, I'm lost. But I'm fine." I bite my lip.
"Where are you headed?" He questions.
I tell him my address, cause I don't know what else to say.
He laughs, "I live in the same neighborhood. We're only 2 minutes away. Did you just move in?"
I sigh in relief. "Thank god! And yeah, my family and I just moved here from Florida."
"Damn, and you moved to Nebraska?" He looks at me in disbelief.
"Tell me about it." I say harshly. "No offense." I quickly add.
He chuckles and says, "Florida's awesome and all, but I promise Omaha'll grow on you. Anyways, I'm going home after I get some gas and you can just follow me home in your car if you want."
I nod my head and smile, "I'll meet you outside." I walk back out and sit in my car. I process in my head the last 30 minutes of my day and conclude that:
A. I look incredibly hot today
or
B. Omaha has a never ending supply of hot guys, who happen to be charmingly nice.
Judging by my sweatpants, t-shirt and messy bun, I'll go with the latter. My thoughts are interrupted when the boy in the gas station pulls his car next to mine and honks. I turn on my car and follow him to our neighborhood.
We arrive at our neighborhood in no more than a minute. I silently curse myself at how stupid I probably looked for getting lost. I pull into my driveway and the boy parks 3 houses down. He walks over as I get the groceries out of my trunk and touches his hair nervously.
"I, uh, forgot to introduce myself. My name is Sam Wilkinson." He holds his hand out.
Taking his hand, I respond, "I'm Shay Connors. Thanks for taking me home. Kind of."
He laughs and asks, "I assume you'll be going to Westside?"
I nod my head, "Yep. First day tomorrow."
"Well since you're new, you probably haven't made many friends yet, have you?" The look blankly at him and shake my head. "Would you want me to take you to school tomorrow? With me?"
I look at him and say, "It's really no problem, I can drive myself." I point my hand towards my car. "I don't wanna be a burden."
He looks me in the eyes and assures, "It's no burden, really. I want to."
I feel butterflies fluttering away in my stomach. I nod my head slowly and bite my lip. "Okay."
"Okay." He smiles. "Let me get your phone number." He pulls out his phone from his pocket and I enter my number.
"Cool. I'll text you later." With that, Sam turns around and walks back to his house.
I grab the groceries and stare at his back as he walks away. What have I gotten myself into?

I'm writing this weeks after I've written the last part, and I would like to apologize for this atrocity of a chapter. I literally cringe when I read it. I hope this chapter doesn't discourage you from continuing to read the story, bc I swear my writing improves significantly :)
