It started like it always does, kids chatting excitedly about their plans for the break and teachers on their phones; having stopped trying to teach weeks ago. Kyle stared at the clock on the lock screen of his phone, anxiously waiting for the last two minutes of class to be over. As he waited, his mind wandered. He was going to be a senior next year, this was his last summer. He probably wouldn't admit it, but he was afraid. Afraid of wasting it. Afraid of what comes after. Afraid that He'd never again feel as alive in the summer as he has in the past.
The bell rang, startling him and causing him to jump. His heart was racing from the sudden fright, and he slipped his phone into his pocket and left the classroom with everyone else.
He was the last one out of the room and in the hall waiting for him was his best friend, Stan Marsh. Stan is a moderately handsome kid, with a bit of a baby face despite his seventeen years. This is something he complains about, but Kyle always found Stan's slight fat a great juxtaposition to his sharp Jewish features.
"Hey, man." Stan smiled, white teeth contrasting with his black hair. "Need to do anything before we go?" They were going to the movies to watch an adaptation of one of their favorite childhood t.v. shows as a celebration of the beginning of Summer. While neither of them had high expectations and anticipated that it would cater to children far younger than them, the idea of seeing their favorite characters on the big screen was too exciting to pass up.
"Nope, I'm ready to go." Kyle grinned, shoving his hands into his jacket pockets, following Stan as he began walking away from the classroom. They weaved their way through their peers, some standing around and talking but most were pooling toward the exit.
In the parking lot the boys had to be mindful of other students who, seemingly, didn't know how to drive. After a couple of near death experiences that they had long grown used to, they made it to Stan's truck, a somewhat worn down older model. The paint was chipped and the seats were becoming threadbare, but Stan was saving up for a new paint job and he kept an old blanket Kyle's mother knitted on the seats.
Kyle climbed inside the truck, the familiar scent of cinnamon greeting him as he opened the door. He glanced at the rear view mirror and saw that Stan had put up another air freshener, cinnamon being his current favorite. After a few minutes of the truck idling, Stan got it to start and they were on their way to the four o'clock movie.
