Chapter Five

Service was great the next morning, the sermon was about the good Samaritan, a story Normani thoroughly enjoyed listening to. She had planned to head to Khalid's house after service and would be happy to share some of the highlights with Khalid's mother, a very sweet, kind and caring woman whom both her grandmother and mother truly loved. She had always had a few snippets of wisdom during their conversations to drop her way, which she was grateful for. She had arrived home just about twenty minutes past midnight as she hadn't needed to drive Justine home, she lived in the vicinity that Jay Park was currently resided in and so she had gotten a ride from him and his companions from the previous evening. Normani sometimes questioned the choices her friend made given that she had only just met those men and had consumed alcoholic beverages at the party right along with them. But who was she to pass judgment, she had practically spent the previous evening speaking to only one individual, if there was to be any talk about her previous night actions, she was certain that would be one major highlight. Normani could already picture the questions Khalid's mother would ask, as Khalid remained pretty frank with his mother about his different observations on life or even friend's actions. If Khalid's mother was privy to her conduct the previous night it would then explain the early call from Houston from her grandmother and mother requesting a call back as soon as possible.

Normani's mother wasted no time in launching into a series of questions about how she had been seen engaged in a conversation throughout the party with only one foreign gentleman and asked who he was. Normani proceeded to explain to her that he had actually been a guest of Khalid's and was very engaging in his conversation style, she reported no flirting exchange had occurred during their intellectual conversation with an exception of a few general attire compliments and common pleasantries shared. Her grandmother interrupted on the other line to voice her opinion on the matter, she encouraged Normani to use both discernment and discretion in the interactions with the opposite gender, emphasizing the need to always remember her roots and goals in life at all times. Normani agreed to these reminders and mentioned stopping at Khalid's house after church which pleased both older women, them knowing that Khalid's mother would be around to chaperone if it was called for. Normani thought to herself at times that they both forgot her current age of twenty-two and still considered her to be the fresh fifteen-year old on her first journey out to LA to achieve her musical career dreams. As much as it may have annoyed her, it was comforting to know they were ever so concerned about her welfare daily.

Upon arriving at Khalid's house, Normani proceeded to head to the kitchen to look for his mother who was standing by the counter preparing the afternoon meal. After greeting her, it was closely followed with a, "Hey baby girl, did you talk to your mother today?" She asked to which Normani responded saying, "Yes, I did auntie, they send you their love all the way from Texas." She smiled adding that they only discussed their children when there was a cause for concern with questionable behavioral displays. Normani nodded in agreement and volunteered to assist with the meal preparation as soon as she met up with Khalid and the others to discuss something. She excused herself from the kitchen area only to catch Khalid outside his in-home studio door. He proceeded to tell her after their greeting that the guys were outside by the pool area but that he and Shawn had to stop at Calvin Harris's home to have a hopefully brief meeting prior to his return. Normani bide both men goodbye and headed over to the pool area to greet the BTS members.

The guys had spared Jin no room for escape whatsoever as soon as they had departed from the party and arrived back at Khalid's place the previous night, questions about Normani, what she was like in reality abounded. He answered as carefully as possible keeping the more intimate details to himself. V, Jimin, and Jungkook asked what trick had been pulled on his end that had managed to keep Normani and him conversing the entire time she had been at the party given the fact that he was not confident in engaging in a conversation held in English. Jin just briefly explained that he had actually used the translating services of the hyung that had come to the party with Jay but then slowly built up the courage to continue the conversation on his own given Normani's receptiveness, her limited Korean grasp and use. "Wait, hyung do you mean to say she can speak Korean?" Jungkook asked excitedly. Jin responded with a simple, "Yes and no, she can understand a few words and common phrases but she is working on improving her skill at communicating in it." They all wondered the same thing he had the previous night at to why she would do that. To this he explained that her goal was to travel to as many countries as possible to perform in the future and she liked to believe that understanding the language of the people who listened to her music would open the door to better communication with the audience and her fans.
