Between The Lines

four

        I was on a roll, scanning pages, circling errors, scan, circle, scan, circle. Every once and a while i would look up to sip some coffee then go right back down to the book set in front of me. When i had gotten to chapter 13 i decided to do a refill. On the way to the break room i peaked my head in Lucas' office.

        "Howdy" I say, shutting the door behind me. He looks up, his glasses falling to the edge of his nose.

        "This is dragging" He says, looking at the book in front of him. The pages were marked endlessly with red.

        "Looks like fun" I smirk. He rolls his eyes and sets his head in his hands. "You okay?"

        "Headache" He says, his voice muffles by his hands. There was a soft knock on the door and it opens to Britt

        "Hey you pencil pushers" She smiles. Lucas looks up and fake smiles  and i do the same

        "Hi Britt'

        "I would like invite you both to my album release party tomorrow night, since you work for daddy i think i should thank you for working so hard" She smiles, handing us a flyer.       

        "Thanks Britt" Lucas says, "Thats really nice of you"

        "i know" She says, flipping her hair over her shoulder

        "Do we need to bring anything?" I ask, trying to be nice

        "Just a nice party dress and a date" She says, "I dont want any loners"

        I open my mouth to speak but she leaves before i can say anything else. I sigh and look at Lucas who gives me a 'I dont even know' look in return. I laugh and say my goodbye and make my way out his office.

        "Noah i think you should come" Britt purrs. i turn the corner to find her leaning against his desk, her pink shirt hanging exposing her bra. Noah keeps his eyes on her face, but you can tell its a challenge.

        "I'm sorry Britt" He says, "I don't have anyone to take"

        "Take me then silly" She laughs, smirking at him. I stay hidden by the wall, looking around. Noah laughs and smiles

        "Then i guess i am going" He says, she giggles and goes around the desk to hug him. When she stands straight again her eyes connect with mine, and she send me the most devilsh smirk ive ever seen.

        5 O'Clock rolls around and i pack up, Lucas stopping in to say goodbye and that he'll text me later. Morris Publishing usually lets out right at 5, but i always stay later. I dont like to take my work home. After my blue bag is sat on my shoulder i turn the light off and shut the door, turning to see one more office light on. People always leave their lights on, so i usually turn them off for them. You know, to save the Earth and stuff.

        I soon find the office is Noah's and that he's still there. His eyes scanning over the novel on his desk, the red pen bouncing in his fingers.

        "Hey" I smile, he looks up and smiles

        "Hey Sophie" He waves me in and i do, sitting in the extra chair. He closes the novel and looks up to me smiling

        " whats the book about" I ask, setting my bag on the floor.

        "It's one of those "Girl meets boy, boy likes other girl, other girl hates girl" Type of things " He laughs. 

        "Yikes" I laugh. Then again isnt that the situation im stuck in? I like Noah, Noah is going to the party with Britt, Britt hates me. huh. 

        "It's going fast though" He  says, "So i cant complain"

        "So" I say, "Have you been invited to Britt's party tomorrow?"

        "yeah" He nods, " I'm her date" 

        "Woah look at you" I act surprised and play punch his arm, "New kid moving on up"

        "she's not my type" He says and i feel like dancing right there on the spot, "The whole California popstar girl thing doesnt do it for me"

        " understandable" I agree

        "Whats your type of man?" He asks. i think for a moment

        " Cute" I laugh, "And someone smart and not cocky. I like funny and sweet guys"

        "Lucas?" Noah asks and i just about laugh.

        "Nooo" I say, "He's a friend"

        "Oh" Noah says, looking off at the wall, a smile on his lips.

        "yeah" I say, the conversation turns from friendly to awkward.

        I was about to talk about New York again when my ring tone started to blare out. 

        "Hello?" I say

        " Babe i need help" Grace says, huffing

        "Whats wrong Grace" 

        " i cant decide which dress to wear, i have a date on Saturday with this super cute guy names Thomas and i need help"

        "I'll be there soon" I say putting my phone back in my pocket.

        "I better go" I say, Noah nods and stands

        "Me too" 

        "I'll see you around the office then" i say, picking my bag back up

        "Stop by during the day" He says, "I could use some friends around here"

        "of course" i smile

        "Have a good night, Soph"

        "You too"
