Chapter 10 – Death trees, death grass, a purple sky and a three-headed dog

“C-Cerberus? He’s real?” I stuttered nervously. How the hell will we come past a gigantic dog? And I also don’t need to forget he has three heads if the Myths are true, which they probably are.  Jack looked at me like I was crazy. Which I probably was in his eyes.

“Of course he is, I know. I saw him before,” he said like it was no big deal. I tilted my head to the side in curiously. Jack told me he was in the Underworld before. And he knows more than he’s supposed to know. For example with the coins, I didn’t know we needed them, but Jack did.

“What do you know?” I questioned him. I saw his him tense up and he got that guarded look on his face. It was like he surrounded himself with walls, he looked at me without a single emotion on his face.

“It’s the best if you don’t know. The less you know the saver you are, believe me.” he replied with emotionless eyes. After he said that it was like some kind of switch went off inside his head. His eyes shone again and a smile appeared, I looked at him a bit freaked out. Talking about mood swings… “Let’s go Niall. We need to help our friends!” He happily said.

He turned on his heels and walked away, leaving me behind in utterly surprise and a bit confused and dumbfounded. I blinked a few times. Jack is really confusing and probably the strangest person I know. I shook my head and started to jog to keep up with his larger strides.

“Where is Cerberus even? Does he really have three heads? Is it going to be dangerous?” I asked him next. Jack tilted his head back and groaned in complete irritation.

“Do you really have to ask that many questions?” He whined. “But to answer them; you will see him soon. Yes, he truly has three heads, and three tails. And the last question depends if he remembers me or not.”

If I said his last sentence didn’t freak me out I would be completely lying, because it did freak me out! And it made me wonder how Jack got in the Underworld previously. But who knows with Jack? For all I know he could have knocked Cerberus knock-out to get inside or he sneaked inside with some secret passage nobody knows about.

The rest of the walk was silence minus Jack once in a while giving instruction about the direction we had to walk. And I mostly spend it with looking around in astonishment.

The Underworld was quite a place and nothing like neither Earth nor Heaven. It was quite fascinating to look at actually.

Firstly we walked on a path made out of brownish yellow grass – death – around us where black trees – also death – and high in the sky flew black birds. Probably crows or ravens, or I hope they were at least.

Everything here was strange and weird and unnatural. I guess Hades liked those things. I mean, even the sky looks weird! It’s not blue like it’s supposed to be. Hades decided to make the sky purple.

A purple sky…

Makes sense Hades… makes a lot of sense…

Why even purple?! Why don’t just make the sky blue?!

Does he like the colour purple that much that he decided to make the sky purple?

“Why is the sky purple?” I blurted out. This time Jack laughed aloud upon hearing my question. “I have honestly no idea, I guess Hades just likes the colour purple.” He replied in amusement.

Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks that.

“Stop,” Jack suddenly whispered and put his hand up to stop me. I looked up at him in confusion until I followed his eyesight. There I saw thousands of souls walking towards what looked like a gate. The souls slowly walked in a line. But my eyesight wasn’t on them.

It was on the gigantic dog-wolf like creature sitting in front of it. Cerberus.

Cerberus had a coal black shaggy fur that was longer around his heads. Just like Jack told me he had three heads with green eyes that shone with fury and fire. He had pretty short pointy ears and what looked like to be spikes that went from the top of his heads till his hips. He also had three wolf like tails. And when I took a better look at him I noticed he even wore a collar, three even. The middle head had a purple collar, the right one wore a red one, and the head to the left had a green one.

He also had a short muzzle but a strong jawline that looked like it could even break rocks and metal with ease. He also had sharp teeth and claws.

I also couldn’t forget he was truly gigantic. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was nearly twelve feet tall.

While I was looking at Cerberus with my mouth hung open I only could think of one thing.

How the hell will we get past him?
