Chapter 11 – Licks from Cerberus
“How the hell will we get past him? I don’t know if you noticed this Jack, but he’s gigantic!” I hissed at my friend.
He shot me his infamous smirk, “Just like I did the last time! Let’s just hope he recognizes me, that will makes this way easier.”
I looked at my friend weirdly, “How did you get past him the last time?”
He avoided my question and looked away, “Let’s go, we have no time to lose.” He said and sprinted away – tagging me along with him – I had to sprint in full speed to keep up with his slightly longer strides. “Not so fast,” I whined in protest, Jack just laughed at me.
My eyes widened when I realized we were sprinting at full speed towards Cerberus. What the hell is Jack doing?!
I swear, he’s going to be the death of me one day.
Cerberus clearly noticed us coming because one of his heads shot up in our direction and his green blazing eyes looked straight at me. I had the feeling he was looking at my soul, making me feel very uncomfortable.
He bared his sharp yellow fangs and teeth at me until he saw Jack. His eyes widened drastically – clearly he did remember my crazy friend, I have no idea if that’s a good or a bad thing. And he barked and happily waggled one of his tails. The other two heads clearly also wanted to know what caught the attention of the third head and when they turned around and saw Jack their reactions were similar. He jumped up and ran towards us, happily barking.
Jack laughed, “I see that he remembers me!” He happily told me with a wide grin. I looked a bit panicked and shot a fearful glance at the dog-wolf thing that was running towards us at full speed.
“And that’s a good thing?” I squeaked out, not liking how my voice sounded. Jack nodded and yelled towards the dog, “Cerberus! Great to see you again!”
Cerberus barked again and when he was in front of us he stopped running and the middle head bent down to our height and to my surprise Jack started to pet his cheek. Cerberus made some kind of purring sound. I didn’t know dogs could purr…
One of the other heads went in front of me and gave me a curious look. He sniffed me a few times and looked thoughtful. All the time I could not move, frozen in fear for the dog who could kill me any second.
“Cerberus, meet Niall! Don’t worry, he’s nice and a friend of mine,” Jack piped up and when Cerberus heard that his head shot forward towards me. I paled thinking he was going to eat me but he did something I last expected.
He licked me. His gigantic, warm and wet tongue licked me from head to toe.
I shot a bewildered glance at the head who had licked me, he was just waggling his tail. Soon all three heads gave me a lick. In no time I had loads of Cerberus salvia all over me.
I smelled myself and my head quickly shot away because of the smell. “Ever heard of brushing your teeth?” I told Cerberus who just blinked at me.
Jack laughed out loud, “You should be glad he licked you, it means he likes you!” Jack told me between a fit of laughter. But he was shut up when Cerberus also licked him. I chuckled at my friend’s expression.
He whipped a bit of salvia away from his face and went to Cerberus. “I told you I would come again to visit didn’t I?” He questioned, Cerberus barked in reply. Jack smiled while I watched on in complete amusement.
I wish I had popcorn.
“Sadly I don’t have time to play, I need to visit Hades. It’s important,” he told the dog who immediately looked sad. “But we can play another time if you wish?” Jack added when he saw his sad expression. He looked happy again and even gave Jack another lick, much to my amusement.
After that he walked back to his previous place – waggling his tails on the way – and calmly sat down.
Jack turned to me, “And this Niall, is how we will get inside.” He told me clearly proud of himself.
After that we calmly walked past Cerberus who let hear a sad whine when his friend left. Jack just waved at him and said ‘goodbye’.
When we were past the gates I could barely progress what just had happened.
