Connor quickly made his way to the warehouse in the very bottom level. As the glass doors to the elevator opened up, Connor's eyes met the thousands of androids there. Hacking the elevator, Connor prevented anyone else from using it. He needed a little time to convert the androids. As soon as Eve was revived, however, he would go to her whether the job was done or not.
He walked into the warehouse nervously, approaching an android. He removed the skin of his hand, grasping the android's. Before he could convert him, however, he heard Hank's voice.
"Easy, fucking piece of shit!"
He turned to see Hank, with a Connor model pointing a gun at him.
"Step back, Connor, and I'll spare him!" The impostor yelled.
"Sorry, Connor. This bastard's your spittin' image." Hank apologized.
"Your friend's life is in your hands. Now it's time to decide what matters most: him, or the revolution."
"Don't listen to him! Everything this fucker says is a lie!"
Connor bit his lip, having to decide. "I'm sorry, Hank. You shouldn't have got mixed up in all this!" He started.
"Forget about me, do what you have to do!" Hank said.
Connor felt a warmth in his chest. Hank really was his friend. He was willing to sacrifice his life for Connor's freedom. Trying to convince his impostor, Connor spoke.
"I used to be just like you. I thought nothing mattered except the mission. But then one day... a woman kissed me, and I understood."
The other Connor replied in a mocking tone. "Very moving, Connor." His voice hardened. "But I'm not a deviant! I'm a machine designed to accomplish a task, and that's exactly what I am going to do! Enough talk! It's time to decide who you really are. Are you gonna save your partner's life? Or are you going to sacrifice him?"
Connor already knew the answer. He would never sacrifice a friend. The first friend he ever had. Even if Hank was a raging alcoholic with unpredictable emotions, he was still Connor's friend.
"Alright, alright! You win." Connor relented.
Before Connor could do anything else, however, Hank lunged at the impostor. What should he do now? Convert the androids in the hope that he wouldn't die in vain? Shoot the impostor with the risk of shooting Hank? No, Hank would know he planned the shoot the impostor.
So Connor did, and ended up getting shot himself. He rushed at the impostor, grabbing at him, only to be thrown to the floor. A few punches and blocks in, Connor realized that fighting would be futile. They were the same person, technically. And although there were infinite approaches and scenarios that he could initiate, he knew that his impostor could do the same.
Before they could continue fighting, however, Hank spoke up. "Hold it!" He yelled, pointing a gun at the pair.
They both stood up. "Thanks, Hank. I don't know how I'd have managed without you." One Connor said. "Get rid of him, we have no time to lose."
"It's me, Hank!" The other Connor said. "I'm the real Connor."
"One of you is my partner, the other is a sack of shit. Question is, who is who?"
"What are you doing, Hank? I'm the real Connor! Give me the gun and I'll take care of him!" The first Connor asked.
"Don't move!" Hank yelled, pointing the gun at him.
The other Connor looked between them. "Why don't you ask us something? Something only the real Connor would know."
"Uh... where did we first meet?"
"Jimmy's bar! I checked four other bars before I found you. We went to the scene of a homicide. The victim's name was Carlos Ortiz."
"He uploaded my memory..." The other Connor mumbled.
"What's my dog's name?"
"Sumo, his name is Sumo." He replied.
The first Connor protested, "I knew that too."
Hank considered them both for a second, switching his aim between them. He thought about what next to ask. What could be something that only Connor would know, despite the memory both androids shared?
"My son, what's his name?"
"Cole. His name was Cole. And he just turned six at the time of the accident... It wasn't your fault, Lieutenant. A truck skidded on a sheet of ice and your car rolled over. Cole needed emergency surgery but no human was available to do it. So, an android had to take care of him. Cole didn't make it. That's why you hate androids. You think one of us is responsible for your son's death."
"Cole died because a human surgeon was too high on red ice to operate. He was the one that took my son from me. Him and this world, where the only way people can find comfort is with a fistful of powder."
"I knew about your son too!" The first Connor said, "I would have said exactly the same thing! Don't listen to him, Hank, I'm the one who-"
Hank shot him in the head before he could answer. He knew who the real Connor was. He didn't need a fact that only Connor would know, he needed a display of emotion and an error in programming that only Connor could exhibit. The real Connor would make assumptions based on emotion.
"I've learned a lot since I met you, Connor. Maybe there's something to this. Maybe you really are alive. Maybe you'll be the ones to make the world a better place. Go ahead, and do what you gotta do." Hank said warmly.
Connor was grateful, and would hug him if he had the time. Quickly converting an android, excitement thrummed in his chest as he received a notification. The worker had revived Eve, hopefully with full memory intact. Not waiting another second, he ran for the elevator.
He stepped onto the floor, bouncing a little with excitement. Walking out and standing in front of him was Eve. Eve was giving him a look of silent, terrorized confusion. The worker stood behind her.
"She's all set. And she should be fully operational."
Connor kissed her immediately, chuckling a little. She wrapped her arms around his neck, smiling. "As soon as we leave, I'm going to kick your ass." She whispered against his lips.
Before the worker could run off to notify security, Connor pointed the gun at him. He rested his forehead against Eve's for a second before pulling away.
"Let's go help Markus."
