Roy had noticed how nervous I was and he had taken my hand and was  squeezing  it as if assuring me of his protection. Someone who did not know our story would have mistaken us for lovers. Anita had opened the door and she was sneering at me. She sized me up and clicked. That was not new to me. I had gotten used to it when I was their slave. I looked at Roy to see his reaction and he was calm but was looking at her distastefully.
She shifted her gaze to Roy and he didn’t blink. I could sense hatred in that look. If looks could kill, Vickie would be dead by now. She smiled at him seductively but he didn’t blink or move. He just continued staring at her without smiling back at her. I felt like I had conquered. I knew she liked him. Who would resist such a guy anyway.
“ What do you want bitch? You can’t come to my house unannounced! Mike is not here! Or do you two need a room? This is not a lodging you know!”
“We are not here for that! I have a car where I can easily do that you know. I have lost count of how many times we have turned it to a lodging today. Anyway, that’s not for you to know. We are here for Jacky’s things!”
I looked at him. I couldn’t believe what he had said. He looked at me and smiled. He didn’t look bothered. I looked at Vickie. Saying she was flabbergasted is an understatement. He had put her to her place. She deserved that and even more.
“Who are you talking to swiry?”
Mike appeared on the doorway and was surprised to see me. “What the hell are you doing here Jacky? I thought I was clear when I said I don’t want to ever see you again!”
I shuddered at his angry voice. Roy sensed it and squeezed my hand tightly. Mike had made me fear him. He had even threatened to kill me if I decided to go back there. His threats were so clear on my mind.
“Hey! We are here for her things. I think there is no problem with that.”
He was so composed. Mike gave us a long look and finally shrugged.
“Okay, but I won’t allow you in. Vickie will bring your things here. Please do that honey.”
She went inside the house and mike followed him. He made sure to lock the door behind him. Roy laughed. It looked funny. Did they think that we would steal from them. The door was opened and they threw my clothes on the ground. What! They didn’t even have a heart to put them even in a suitcase. Even a paper bag would have been better.
Vickie went back to the house and came back with a matchstick and a bottle with paraffin. I sensed what she wanted to do and started throwing tantrums but Roy pulled me back.
“Let it be Jacky.”
We watched as my clothes were burnt into ashes. I was grateful I had taken my documents with me. Mike watched the whole thing and said nothing. He was just smiling at his “wife’s” brains. She had manipulated him to hate me and everything she did was right for him. Vickie looked at what she had done and smiled with satisfaction. She eyed us and approached us clapping her hands.
“Well! How does that feel? Ooh! Sorry baby. I burnt your clothes but what can you do? It was a mistake anyway!” she laughed at her word and Mike joined in. I was not so strong when humiliated and I was at the verge of tears but I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction to mock me more. I had always cried and they had nicknamed me “crying baby”.
“ Are you done? Maybe there is something that you have forgotten in the house and you need to burn it down too. Are you sure you have burnt everything down. I don’t want us to leave anything behind. You should burn all her things down.” Roy’s voice sounded calm but his level of sarcasm was at it’s peak. Mike and Vickie gave  each other confused looks. I liked the effect he had on them.
“I can see there is nothing else. So how much do you think all those clothes cost? I don’t think they cost a fortune. We can always buy other clothes. Money is never a problem. Let’s go Jacky.” He turned to leave but remembered something and turned to look at them. “And something else home wrecker, Karma is always a bitch. You don’t know what will come your way. And you dude, I didn’t think there are some men who don’t care about their kids until I heard about you. Have a good day.”
We left them there dumb founded. Someone had stood for me and I liked that.  I felt triumphant. I felt as if I had won.
