Chapter 7: Underdog

Leader of Mercenary's POV

"I want you to capture this girl alive. I don't care how you do it but I want her alive and in one piece. If you are successful then I will reward you with the promised amount." 16 of us after one girl. Is she that strong? "I know what some of you might be thinking. Is his girl really this strong? Yes, if you watch this footage then you'll see when I mean." A video was projected up onto the wall. The boss was there and watching a video of some sorts when a green smoke seeped into the room through the computer screens. "What the..." The smoke started to resemble a human like figure. This is some high level magic. The second in command walked through the door and the green smoke disappeared. Are we going to be chasing a green figure? No, he said that it was a girl so I assume that this is the girls doing. We watched as the smoke overcame the second in command and also threatened the boss. No wonder he specially called us aura mercenaries and is going to pay us over 1 million Russian Ruble to capture this girl. "Use any means necessary. If she escapes then you won't get paid." I wanted to object and say that he couldn't do that but since he's the client we have to listen to him. "She is south bound of this base." We gave him a quick bow and started to track her down in the forest. We used mini wireless ear pieces to communicate to each other.

"I found her!" A voice said through the ear piece. "Directly south from the base around 1500m away. I could see the rest of my men heading towards that location. We stopped and hid in the trees as soon as we saw her. She was resting on the side of a huge tree.

"Jack, prepare a weakening arrow and shoot on my command." I watched as Jack loaded his bow. "3, 2, 1, fire." He let the arrow loose and missed because she dodged it. She scanned the trees and started to run. "Any means necessary guys! Let's go!" We chased after her through the forest. My guys started shooting arrows, fireball and ice spikes at her. She's quick and agile, I'll give her that! We chased her for a few more minutes or so when someone finally managed to get a shot. A small ice spike pierced through her right side which made her stumble a bit and stopped running. We surrounded her in an instant.

"Not now." She took out a white ball and threw it onto the ground.

Zaku's POV

I took out a flash bang and threw it onto the ground while shielding my eyes. After three seconds, I continued running but in the opposite direction hoping to throw them off so that I'll give me some time to escape. With this wound, I don't think that I'll be able to escape these guys. Their destruction aura is amazing and the amount of concentration it takes to form an ice spear is phenomenal. Normally, people can only fire one spear every 30 seconds but they were throwing them once every 5 which is mind blowing. These guys aren't your average mercenaries. I need to contact the others for help and fast. I looked at my GPS and saw that Alex was in range for contact so I gave him a voice message about my whereabouts. Now for the hard part, I need to find a spot to hide and rest while I wait for them to arrive. I'm not the kind of person to ask for help but I think that this is an exception considering the fact that I've just burnt all my mana just to infiltrate the base and snoop around camouflage. Making yourself camouflaged takes a lot of mana and I was in there for at least 15 minutes. That was a bad idea and I don't even remember why I wanted to go in there in the first place! Jeez, I need to stick to my own plans and stay safe like I told everyone else to.

"Hello there missy, we've finally found you." Crap, I completely let my guard down. I need to run.

"Arg." Damn it, it's no use. The ice spear is stopping me from moving. "What do you want?"

"It's not what I want it's what my boss wants. My job is to take you to him in one piece." I knew that threatening him was a bad idea and now I'm in this situation. There's not much I can do besides delay and hope that the others get here on time.

"I'm not going and you can't make me."

"Well that's where you're wrong, I can just carry you there without a problem." He grabbed my wrist and started dragging me.

"This is hardly called carrying me wimp." He turned around and threw me onto his back. Perfect, I bit him in the neck as hard as I could and he threw me off into a tree. I watched as his friends armed their bows and pointed them at me.

"You little... Do you need to be taught a lesson?"

"What kind of lesson?" I knew that winding people up was the best way to stall and buy time. "Does it involve sweets?" This is quite fun actually.

"No, it's this." He raised a hand and one of his men shot and arrow at me. It pierced right through my left thigh. That was not so fun. Running's not an option anymore I guess. I laughed a bit because I never thought that I would be in a position like this. I was always the one beating people down and now I've become the underdog. Huh, I guess its karma. "How dare you mock me?" He pointed at my stomach and another arrow was shot at me. This one didn't pierce through but it was still lodged into my stomach. At this rate, I won't be able to stall for much longer. "Do you want some more?" I looked down at my GPS and saw that they were nearly here. "I have 15 men here who are more than happy to shoot you. Don't you think that it's time to give up? I looked up and saw them running towards me. Alex was leading the group with Pina on his back. The group stopped behind the mercenary leader and looked around.

"Are you sure this is the east?" Alex asked. Can they not see us?

"Yes, I'm sure. I can feel her aura here but it's very faint. Her life force is telling me that she's somewhere over there." Pina points right at me. Alex walks closer and straight through the leader. What? "She should be right in front of us but she's not. I don't get it at all." The others paces around the area a bit. I know what's happening now, they've somehow made a small tear in the space time continuum which has pulled us into a place which doesn't exist or exist.

"Alex, Pina..." I said weakly.

"Its no use, they can't hear, see, smell or feel you. Are you going to give up now?" There wasn't much I could do but give up. "What's your answer?" I'm going to get captured anyway so there's not much point in asking. "Given up eh?" They need smarter mercenaries... Actually, take that back. I looked down at my wounds and sighed. I've never been covered in this much of my own blood before. There's always a first for everything I guess. I haven't put up much of a fight against these guys since I had no mana before but I do have a bit which will allow me to cast one spell so I better make it count. A spell that'll be able to ripple through space and time... Do I know any? "What are you thinking about miss?" A spell... A spell... Got one! It's not an offensive one but it does make a rip in the space time continuum which means that they should be able to see it. The spell creates a small glowing crystal ball. Better than nothing I guess. I chanted the spell and summoned it. In an instant, it was sucked into the dimension that the others were. "I think you've done enough, let's go and meet the boss." The guy put an aura-bound chain around my wrist and ankles. "And one more just for safety." What's that? He's conjuring something and I don't know what. "No more aura using for you for quite some time." He shot something at me that went into my chest where the central aura point is.

"I give up..."

Author's Note

Did Zaku actually say that at the end? A bit of a twist in the end. So, this book isn't going to be update at a regular basis eg every so and so days but more like as and when I finish the next chapter. BUT... There will definitely be at least one chapter in 5 days. When I reach I dunno... 500 or 1K then I'll do a super week in which I'll post one chapter everyday.
