Chapter 1: Introduction

Chapter 1:

"So, Miss Jade, can you please tell us what you were doing out of class this afternoon?" My parents and the principal's cold hard stare was always uncomfortable, especially now. I couldn't give up our secret though.

"I.. um... cramps!" I said to quickly for it to be believable,"I had cramps and I was in the bathroom and I needed to get some fresh air so I took a walk outside. I'm sorry, I must have lost track of time really." I searched their eyes for a shred of compassion then bam, they believed me and were sympathetic.

"Oh it's quite alright Jade," my principal said and she almost instantly had an overwhelming amount of compassion,"You may return back to your classes."

And with that I hopped out of my chair and out the door. I was almost halfway down the hall when they caught up to me. "Did they suspect anything?" Gage asked me with wide eyes.

"Nah," I replied assuring," the usual." Lacey looked at me with relief and I turned and faced the rest of the gang.

Graham's eyes looked relieved and Joshua's too. Ellie and Saunter were too in love to notice anything and Elijah was just normal with his hands in his pockets.

We had been friends for a while... but we weren't your average teen. We kept walking down the hall and we opened the door to history class.

"And in 1492 Christopher- oh hello there," Miss Jones said to us looking genuinely surprised. "Hello Miss Jones, sorry we're late, we were just about to take a seat." Elijah stared deeply into her eyes probably using his controlling again and we took our seats in the back at an empty table like always.

I guess the other kids would consider us cool and popular, or rejects, we didn't really care. We had more stress on our minds. It wasn't easy keeping a dark secret.

The other students had eventually got sick of looking at us and turned to face the board. We all turned to face each other while sitting on the round table and the teacher babbled on about Christopher Columbus.

"We have to be more careful,"Graham said to all of us. "Yeah I think we know!" Lacey said in her usual snotty tone. I sighed loudly,"Guys I don't know, it's so hard right now. It really is I don't know how much longer we can all keep it up."

Saunter was the one who spoke up and pulled away from Ellie,"I agree, it's pretty stressful, we need to leave soon. I think it's about time. Jade is finally old enough now."

I felt as though someone had hit me in the face really hard. I had never imagined actually leaving here. I mean, I grew up here, I was turned here, what about my family?

I know, I know. Lousy excuse to move really. I stared down at my hands and messed with my thumbs. I really didn't know how to reply. I looked up to see Elijah's bronze eyes lingering on mine.

I felt tears sting my eyes and I looked away from his concerned expression and tried to clear my mind. I missed my normal days. The days where I woke up and I didn't have guilts or worries. When I was a normal teenage girl.

One tear slipped and Elijah quickly leaned over the table and brushed it off of my face. I smiled at him and sniffled and he smiled back.

"He's right." Gage said,"It will be soon, we're not naming any dates though." "Since when did we name you decision maker eh?" Graham said.

He wasn't in a good mood already he had been stressing about what happened last night and we all had stressed for him too.

I agreed though. Gage tended to make decisions more than the rest of us. He looked at me with a hard stare and I stared back at him until he looked away knowing he was defeated.

I was always trying to act stronger than I really felt on the inside. It was easier for me to block out their thoughts and not read anyone's thoughts. It was crazy what had happened in my life.

No, crazy wasn't a logical term for this situation, it was mental, even psycho. I wish I could go back. Change that one night. The night that had me ending up as another one of them with a secret.

I don't regret all of it. I just regret keeping it a secret, although I wouldn't want to be held captive in a circus or a zoo anyways. We weren't caged animals. Or would you even consider us animals?

I looked up from my hands to see them all gazing at me with curious eyes expecting something. "Well?" Gage spoke clearly,"What do you think about leaving?"

"Well I umm... I uhh....." I really didn't know how to end that sentence.
