Foul language warning from this chapter onward.
Nae-un got back to the dormitory after her jog, when she remembered that she was going to visit her parents the next day "Bloshivicks!! Got to pack, got to pack, got to pack, got to pack!" She was only planning on staying for one night so she just shoved pyjamas and a change of clothes into her backpack. After setting her alarm, Nae-un collapsed face first into her bed.
The next morning Nae-un hauled herself out of bed and got ready to go see her family. It was quite cold outside so she wore her black winter coat and pulled on a scarf at the last minute as she rushed out the door. She half ran, half walked to the train station.
She sat by the window and watched as the city melted away and was replaced by open spaces and fields, something she had always taken for granted as a child. Nae-un found the city too noisy and crowded, she didn't like that it was virtually impossible to go anywhere and not find people. When she was younger she would have spent hours in some hidden spot, playing pretend with her brothers or practicing her magic. She was snapped out of her thoughts when the train finally pulled into the station in her home town.
When she arrived at her parents house she was greeted by her two older brothers Jae and Eunjin. In a split second Nae-un found herself caught in a three way hug/headlock. "There's our dumbass little sis" "what you playing at huh? I've only gotten three calls from you this term. Why has Jae had six!?" "Jae. JAE!! Can't. Breath. Let. Go!!" A slightly more disheveled Nae-un swatted her clingy older brothers away after finally managing to untangle herself from their embrace with a big smile on her face. To Nae-un, it didn't feel like home until her brothers almost killed her with some gesture of affection or other. "I'm a legal adult now! Stop treating me like a little kid!" Both her brothers looked at each other and replied in unison "Naaaah. Don't want to"
While eating dinner with her family Nae-un said "I was thinking about going to see Nana and Granpa before I head back to Seoul tomorrow" "bad timing sis. They've gone on a trip to the mountains" Jae said with his fork hanging out of his mouth. Nae-un rolled her eyes at his immature table manners and was about to tell him off when her father spoke "That reminds me. Nana left some books for you to take with you, to help you study" getting up her farther disappeared up the stairs. He came back a few minutes later with his arms full of old, slightly beaten and dusty books. "Just as well I traveled light this time" Nae-un said with a sigh. There was no way she would have been able to bring all those books back with her if she had more luggage. It didn't surprise her in the slightest that her grandmother had left enough books to learn the entire Glyphics course syllabus.
Nae-un was reluctant and sad to leave home again, as always. She said her goodbyes in a hurry because she was running late to catch the train. By the time she got back to Seoul it was late. Nae-un always saw the city at night time as a dangerous place, so she was eager to get back to her dorm. Weighing up her options, she decided to take a shortcut through an alley.
As she was walking down the alley she heard voices. There were three people standing in her way talking. Nae-un quickly ducked behind a dumpster that was standing nearby, hoping that they hadn't seen her. After all nothing good was ever discussed by three shifty looking people in an alley at night.
// Alright Nae-un, just stay where you are, keep quiet and wait till they leave. You'll be fine, they haven't seen you. //
She stayed crouched behind the dumpster listening to their conversation. "I don't have it. But I can get it to you by the end of the month" "if we wanted it at the end of the month we would have given you till the end of the month in the first place" Nae-un listened in horror at the exchange going on just a few feet away from her.
// oh god! What have I walked into? If they see my they'll kill me for sure //
The three people continued to talk. "Please! I promise I'll give you the money, I just need a little more time!" "How much of it do you have? And for your sake I advise you not to lie." The deep, harsh tone of the third man's voice sent shivers up Nae-un's spine. She did her best NOT to imagine what these guys would do to the other man if they didn't get what they wanted. "I've got about 70% percent here with me" "70% huh? Ok I'll cut you a deal. You've ever tried anything funny before so I'm feeling generous. Gimme everything you've got now and I'll give you two months to come up with the rest along with an extra 2000. Got it?" Nae-un could hear the other man's relieved sigh "but just so that you know what will happen if you come back empty handed and to teach you not to be late again, kook is going to have a little fun with you"
In that moment Nae-un's blood ran cold. She knew what was about to happen. She held her breath and nervously peeked out from behind the dumpster. The man was already quite badly beaten and it looked like his nose might be broken, but she couldn't tell in the dark from the distance. She quickly jerked her head back, not wanting to see any more, when she lost her balance and fell back.
Nae-un stuck her hands out to stop herself from falling but it was too late. She bumped against the metal dumpster with a loud thud and knocked over some empty bottles that had been beside her. There was a moment of silence before the man with the deep voice called out "Who's there?" Nae-un stayed there frozen in place with fear. Her mind was buzzing a mile a minute trying to figure out a way out of the situation. She couldn't think of any way to escape so she stayed put holding her breath, hoping that the men would just assume it was a rat or something and ignore the sound.
However her hopes were shattered when she heard footsteps approaching her. Without thinking she stood up and started to run away out of the alley. Just as she was running someone grabbed her arm. It was the guy who was beating up the other man. Nae-un looked up at him with wild, wide eyes. She struggled in his grip trying to pry his hand away. It was no good though his grip was too strong. She reached her free hand out trying to scratch his face, hoping it would throw him off enough to be able to get away. He caught her wrist and held it away from him, her attacks couldn't even get close to their mark. Nae-un knew she wouldn't be able to fight him off, he was probably about a foot taller than her and double her strength. With a small shriek she kicked out at him in desperation to come free from his grasp. The sudden attack threw him off and he loosened his grip in surprise. Nae-un took that chance to twist herself free and run as fast as she could to a crowded street where they couldn't go after her, leaving the two men behind in the alley.
"Fuck! The bastard ran off before we were finished with him. And on top of that someone saw it all happen." "Get your priorities straight Kook! I was about to stop you anyway. The real problem is her" "what do we do now hyung?" The older man sighed and ruffled his hair in frustration "how the hell did you loose her? Seriously she was half your size!" "She.... kicked me hyung" letting out an exasperated huff the older man continued "Jesus fucking Christ Jungkook! All it took was a kick from a little girl! Aaaaargh! Namjoon's not going to like this" "he'll listen to you hyung, don't worry" "who said I was telling him? You lost her, you can tell Namjoon what happened!"
With that both men walked out of the alley dragging their feet. They didn't have the money they came for and they didn't catch the girl who saw it all happen. In short they were not looking forward to seeing the rest of their gang.
