Stevie~

I smiled as I mined a block of stone with my iron pick, and the blue glow of a diamond ore block revealed itself.

"Steve! Get over here! We've hit the jackpot!" I called to my brother, who was smelting some gold ore on the opposite side of the cave.

He dropped what he was doing and came over to see. "Diamond? No way!"

I beamed. "Best thing we've found yet!"

Steve nodded. "Go ahead and do the honors! You found it, you deserve it."

I lifted my pickaxe and brought it down on the block several times before a blue jewel finally popped out. I picked up the diamond, turning it over in my hands and admiring it's shiny surface. I handed it to him. "There must be three or four more of these in there! Put this somewhere safe, I'll get the rest."

As Steve went back over to the furnace to collect the smelted ore, I finished mining the three other diamond blocks that I could find.

"Four diamonds, that's enough to make swords for both of us!" I exclaimed excitedly.

Steve smiled and nodded. "Just three more, and we can make a pickaxe. One step closer to the Nether!"

I high-fived him. Going to the Nether had always been our dream. We had been working together on it ever since dad died, trying to fulfill the dream that he had never gotten to complete.

Our happy moment was cut off by a scream. We exchanged worried glances, staring off into the direction the noise had come from. "Another miner?"

Steve shrugged. "Sounds like it. The zombies will be well-fed tonight."

I bit my lip, feeling sympathetic for whoever the poor miner was who had fallen victim to the mobs. I wish I could help them, but they sound to far away...

I continued to look into the darkness, even after Steve turned back to his work, ignoring the mishap. He had always been more tolerate about these things than me. He had always said I was soft. That helping people wouldn't get me anywhere in this world. Survival of the fittest and all that.

"I think I see some more iron down there, can you go get it?" He asked, pulling me out of my trance.

"Oh, err, sure." I answered, picking up my pickaxe from where it lay on the stone floor. I took one of the torches off the wall and carried it through the tunnel, the dim firelight illuminating the cave. My eyes fell on the vein of iron ore that Steve had mentioned.

As I began to mine the blocks, I heard another scream, this one sounding closer. I sighed and closed my eyes, trying to block it out. I'm going to have nightmares about this, I just know it.

When I had finished collecting all of the ore, I began to walk back through the cave. That was, until I heard the screaming and yelling get closer. And closer. The voices of several zombies and spiders joined the group. Then one yell caught my attention.

"HELP!"

My head snapped towards the sound. The miner was coming closer. Actually, it sounded like multiple miners.

My first instinct was to run and help them, but there was no way I could take all those mobs on with only a pickaxe, and I had left my iron sword back with Steve. I guess that was a stupid idea.

So I took off in the opposite direction, back down the tunnel to find my brother and warn him.

"Steve! Steve!" I shouted.

He looked up. "What is it? Did you get the ore?"

"Yes, but those miners, they're coming! And they've brought mobs!"
