Sunday
Ash pov
"Romans 8:28 says... And we know that all things unto the Lord will work together in your favor..." The preacher went on in monotone as I glanced down at my phone. My mom hit me and I looked up.
"Wake up." She said to me between her teeth.
"I'm not-"
"Shhh." I looked beside me and eyed the old lady. I was so glad I wasn't in my old church. That lady would have had permission to pinch me.
"Mom can I be excused?" I whispered to her. She looked at me and nodded. She knew I wasnt comfortable in this setting.
At my old church, teens had a different group than the elders, but here, everybody was all bunched together smelling like moth balls and some ancient mummy perfume.I squeezed through people without a care in the world before I was finally free to walk to the restroom in the back down a dim hallway that smelled like bread and old cheese. My stomach growled. My mom decided not to feed me since this was the first Sunday and after church they'd be serving food to every new guest first.
I closed the rickety door behind me and locked it to call Unique. She said she'd be here in a bit. What was taking her so long?
"Hey this is Unique-"
"Niq, please hurry up and come. I'm dying here. It's boring as... You know. Text me back." I said to her.
"So leave a message." She finished. Her phone beeped and I groaned and hung up. I should have known it was her voicemail. I'm mediately after I hung up she called back. I answered.
"Hey Ash." She said to me in a quiet voice.
"Hey babe, you good? I jus-"
"I'm still at home, I'm sorry." She apologized. She began to cry and I frowned.
"Aye, it's fine. Just tell me you need a ride next time. My mom wouldn't mind stopping to get you." I said to her in the sweetest tone I could think of. I didn't know much about her, but I knew she had a curfew and a strict dad. That's all she told me about her home life and even then it didn't sit right with me.
"Okay, could I see you after you get out of church?" She asked me sighing.
"Yeah, that's fine. Everything okay Niq?" I asked cautiously. I didn't wanna think someone was standing behind her listening to her talk to me. I didn't like the thought of that being in my head at the moment. It made me angry that she had to go through that.
"I'm fine. Just need a hug." She said to me sniffling. I smiled half heartedly.
"I wish I could hug you right now." I said under my breath.
"Niq, get the fuck in here and clean this shit up! Lazy as lil bitch! Get off the fucking phone!" Her dad yelled. I balled my fist up and frowned. He was the last person to call her lazy.
I knew for a fact that when she wasn't at our house trying to clean up a mess I made, she'd be at her own doing the same thing. She always complained about having to clean up after his over grown ass. On top of that, she worked. He was her dad, he needed to pick up where she left off when she wasn't home. Especially since he wasn't working to bring money in the house.
"Yes sir. I gotta go Ash. I'm sorry." She said to me.
"It's okay.. I'll be around there to.." I heard a click and sighed. "pick you up." I finished before leaving out of the restroom.
