Ethan's POV

Bryant's death did nothing but kill me inside, he was the only one I had left and after finding out those people just kill anyone in sight there might not be anybody else left for me to find. I might be alone for the rest of my life, or just die to the hands of them.

Everyone's left me.

November 17, 2008

The past couple of weeks I've just been moving from town to town as usual. I haven't been as careful as I used to be, what's the point when it's only yourself you have to worry about and you're not sure you even want to make it. I have nobody else left, there's murderers after me, I just want to give up at this point. The only thing keeping me going is the thought of Bryant, he wouldn't want me to give up, he'd be disappointed in me for just stopping and letting them win. I didn't want to die by the hands of them, I wanted to avenge Bryant, give purpose to his death and make him proud.

I was lying on a bed looking down at the map, preparing myself for the next walk to the next town over tomorrow morning. I need to keep moving, a couple towns back I stayed too long and they had caught up to me, it was close but I managed.

I folded up my map, stuffing it into my backpack pocket and blowing out the candle that lit the room up.

As I stared at the wall in front of me trying to fall asleep at the voice of my thoughts a sudden creek was heard and followed by silence. I sat up on my bed, silent, listening for any movement. I opened my door a little, crawling over to the stairs looking down at the front of the house. The door opened wide bringing the light of the moon to shine in, three black shadows cascaded across the floor, guns pointed out, ready to kill.

I stepped back into my room, quietly shutting the door and locking it afterwards.

I gingerly picked up my backpack while stepping back to the window behind me. Footsteps passed by my door, shadows underneath the door we're passing by, checking the other rooms which only gave me some time to escape before I was found.

I carefully pulled open the window, throwing out my backpack first, the contents spilling out over the ground as it landed. I quickly put my foot up on the apron of the window grabbing onto the casing and rising my body up getting ready to jump out. I flung my leg out to the side, straddling the exterior still as I looked down at the somewhat high drop.

The door knob twisted getting caught by the lock, they busted it open seconds after, as the door was slowly pushed open, I turned swinging both legs out and half my body, the man raised his gun up and fired several shots in my direction, I let go of the window and fell down to the ground, quickly scrambling up and jumping back under the roof to avoid more shots being fired my way.

I heard everyone running down and out the house to come after me, I quickly gathered my backpack, stuffing Zayn inside and running for my life. Several shots were fired as I kept running, ducking under branches, jumping over roots and fallen trees, I ran and ran until I collapsed.

I looked around for any shelter or help, there was a small pond with a fallen tree, the leaves covering part of a space providing me with a place to hide. I dragged my feet across the water, pushing the leaves aside and falling down into the water as I tried to steady my breathing.

I heard voices close by speaking in a language I couldn't comprehend, footsteps trudged around in the water as others were off to the distance. The person in the water searched around until they spotted my area, they came closer and closer, each step increasing my heart rate, they were about five feet away before someone called out some words and they all went running off into a direction.

I slumped down into the muddy water, relieved to have escaped.
