While You Can

"Kamber, honey, I'm taking your brother to school. I'll be at work this afternoon!" my mom called from downstairs. "Make sure you pick your brother up from the neighbors when you get home."

I was on my way down the staircase to tell Justin goodbye.

"Okay now go before you're late." I watched as she walked Justin out the door.

Once they were out the door I showered and got dressed, ready to begin my miserable first day of school and made my way out the door.

Pulling up into the school parking lot was scary. My heart was pounding in my chest.

"Remember, first impressions for the adults here are the most important thing right now. And you're not gonna give in to anyone at anytime. You're your own self. You will not tolerate being bossed around. You will stand up for yourself and you will fight back. But not on the first day," I said to myself as I climbed out the car.

I checked out my outfit. Black tights, purple v-neck t-shirt that stopped at my knees, and purple vans.

I pulled open the school doors and began walking down the hall. I received a few stares from some boys. At first I thought it was because of what I was wearing but when I looked at the other girls I suddenly didn't feel so insecure. I shrugged all thoughts aside and went to the front office.

Once I entered, they sent me straight to the principal's office.

"Miss Hines this is a very big school. I must appoint you to like a tour guide. If that's okay with you?" The principal asked.

"That's fine, I could use a little guiding." I smiled.

"Yes, I will find you one. Ahh Mr. Styles great timing."

"I'm only here to talk about my suspension," a voice said from behind me. I knew that voice from somewhere and immediately turned around. It was the curly haired boy from the park.

"All of those charges will be dropped because I need you to do something for me."

"Listen Mr. Stevens, I don't do favors. Never have, never will."

"Well if you don't, then it would be my pleasure to fail you," Mr. Stevens said with a firm smirk on his face.

"What the hell Mr. Stevens?"

"Language," the principal warned. Curly only rolled his eyes.

"What do I have to do?"

"You have to assist Miss Hines around for a week or so." The boy looked at me and his eyes widened.

"Like hell I do! I'm not showing that bitch around!" he demanded.

"Well then I'll see you next year while all your other friends have graduated." I heard the boy sigh then sit down on the couch in the principal's office.

"What's in it for me?" he asked. Wow this boy is so disrespectful.

"I'll bump your grades up and cancel your suspension. Besides, as much as you've been getting suspended you need this. Suspension can fail you too."

"You're talking things I like to hear, old man," Curly replied, nodding his head as if to approve of what was going on.

Where is my say so in all of this?

"Mr. Stevens," I interupted and the boy groaned. "No disrespect but I've been invisible for like five minutes now. You don't have to go through all this trouble for me. I mean I do not want his school grades to be put on the line because of me. But I also don't want him to be dragged into babysitting me," I offered.
