To Touch the Sky

I wrote this poem for a previous writing contest, I hope your enjoy!

There is a tree as tall as can be that lives in my backyard.

Daddy told me it probably reaches up to the shiny stars,
For a while I believed him.

But now that i'm four I know some more.
I know that i'm small but that's nothing at All compared to how I feel in the shadow Of the big tree.

Tommorow I'll be five,
then I'll take a dive.
I'll surprise my dad by climbing the big ol' tree.
I will not fall, not at all, when I climb the giant tree.

Now that i am five,
the branches seem as sharp as knives.
but like I said before,
when I was only four.
I will not fall, not at all when I climb the big ol' tree.

I grabbed the first branch,
like grandad told me to on his ranch.
Up and up I go, don't look down...
Oh no!

I tore my new pants on a jagged tree branch!
mum will have a fit,
then I'll have to sit,
In time out for a real long time.

I turned around to see the tear and fell out of the tree,
breaking a chair!
Dad came running out, as I began to pout. My knees are sore,
my shoulder hurts,
I've never felt more pain before!

Never again will I try to climb a tree so very high.
Now I'm six and I can tell that my injuries were so very hard to fix.

The tree still stands in my backyard, forever laughing at me.
But I will not Yearn to climb it because like I had to learn before the ground is real hard,
down in my backyard.
I will not yearn to climb it because the ground is real hard.
