"Now, are you going to cooperate with me or do we have to do this the hard way?" The dragon loomed over me, his claws dragged against the ash floor.
"I-I never caught your name" I said stiffly, attempting to change the subject "Loki said something like Nid- nidodd?"
"Nidhogg" Loki interrupted weakly as he slouched against the back of the cave.
Nidhogg shot him an annoyed look "shut up"
"That's funny. I-It uh- sounds like a hog" I said trying to force a fake laugh.
"I don't have time for this. Are you going to kill him or do you need my persuasion?" His nostrils flared with smoke.
Loki shot up on his feet in alarm "kill me?" He chuckled nervously "let's not get too ahead of ourselves."
"I'm not going to do it" I decided firmly "I'm not going to kill him"
I felt Nidhogg flipping through my mind like pages in a book. It made me uncomfortable, like he was stripping me of all my privacy.
"Your worst fear is being hated and feared by everyone you pass by, even the ones you love" he half hissed, half chuckled "you also fear... Your father"
A wave of anger passed through me.
"what else... You hate blood. Oh my, you must have had a terrible day down here"
I wrinkled my nose "I have a feeling it's about to get worse"
Nidhogg paused. His eyes seemed to stare into my soul "spiders. Now there's something I can work with."
Suddenly the room became dark. There was a faint glow and a shuffle of small footsteps. Then there was a tingling sensation. It startled at my foot but began to move upwards. As I tried to move I found that I was completely paralyzed. The spiders crawled up my cheeks and onto my forehead. A dim red light spread through the room. To my horror I found myself completely covered in the terrible creatures. Then they began to bite. It was the worst pain I had ever felt in my life. No, I wouldn't call it pain, it was something much much worse. My whole body felt as if it were on fire. Their bites became rougher, until they would rip off skin, tearing off little pieces. With every tear of skin my blood began to pour like a waterfall until it felt like my insides would flow out with them. I heard a terrified scream, one I was too much in pain to realize was my own. As I screamed in torment the spiders took the opportunity to crawl down my throat. I began to gag as they tore up my insides, all I could feel was a never ending pain. There was another ringing in my ears, a yell. This one wasn't mine, but Loki's, as if he were trying to open a door to my mind, but all he could do was bang on in. Only about a sentence got through to me this is an illusion. Wake up it took my a moment to understand, because spiders eating at the inside of your throat is quite distracting.
Suddenly my eyes fluttered open. I shot straight up as I trembled with fear, goosebumps crawled up my arm. For a second my world was blurry. All I could hear was a loud ringing. As I finally got control of my senses I realized I was sobbing. Loki was kneeling beside me, his arm around my shoulders.
"Are you alright?" He asked carefully.
I tried to respond, but I only sputtered as tears trickled down my cheeks.
"It was just an illusion, Its- it's-" loki's eyes wavered to Nidhogg with anger filling his veins "no, it's not ok"
He slowly rose, not hesitating as he stared the beast right in the eyes "what did you do to her?"
"Funny thing about illusions, you can't die. You wanna know what makes mine so special? I can give my victims as much pain as I wish and they'll never die. Your lover over there just withstood a torture that would have killed her 1,000 times in her mortal flesh"
Loki looked as if he might explode "I refuse to be pushed around by some overgrown lizard! I am Loki Laufeyson, and I am-"
Nidhogg looked bored "Burdened with glorious purpose. yes, you've used that line before. Now onto a more exciting subject. As we wait for he to recover, let's have a little chat about the best way to make you die."
Loki's skin began to turn a frosty blue. His eyes blazed red. What almost looked like patterned veins started to pop from his skin. "Have you ever crossed a frost giant when they're angry?" He grit his teeth and knit his eyebrows, sending the dragon a determined glare.
Nidhogg gave an amused smile "ooh, interesting move. Are you sure you want your lover to see who you truly are soon?" He turned to me "take one long look. He's a monster"
Seeing Loki like this, at first, was startling. But then I realized, this was who he truly was. It was the part of him he hated and tried to hide deep down inside of him, but let loose just to save me.
I glared at Nidhogg "He's not the monster. You are." I said coldly.
"I'm allot of things, but I'm no monster. Maybe in appearance, yes, but I merely punish people for their wrong doings."
I shivered "what were my wrong doings?"
"It wasn't necessarily what you did, it was the battles you chose. You've got to be smart about how you choose your battles. This here, this isn't your fight, but your suffering the consequences anyway aren't you? You've also got to be smart about the ones you fight them with" he smirked as he glanced at Loki "if you hang out with the wrong people your bound to face the consequences"
I'd have to admit, that was pretty wise coming from a 10 foot dragon.
"Now I'm going to give you one more chance to choose" the fiery veins that ran through him seemed to dim.
I thought through his offer a moment. There was no way I wanted to go through that experience again. Then again, if Loki were dead he would be stuck here and go through this torture every day. I couldn't let that happen.
"I'm not going to kill him" I said stubbornly "not ever"
Nidhogg stomped his foot in frustration, making rocks from the ceiling topple to the ground. "Your going to regret that decision. To think, I was debating on letting you go after this is over. I'll keep you here to rot. Now, what's next? spiders again? No, let's try a new fear..."
My face paled, stricken in fright "n-no"
Loki seemed to have a plan. He concentrated on Nidhogg not even bothering to blink
"I must say, mortals have such boring weaknesses. I've only got one. Ice" suddenly Nidhogg jerked his head. He stared at Loki in disbelief "How did you do that?"
A grin played on Loki's face, but his eyes held pure determination "Your not the only one who's got mind games."
Suddenly , there was a burst of ice, almost like a blizzard.
A cold hand seized mine, and I immediately understood Loki's plan. Run.
