"Does he usually take this long?" your mom asked with an impatient huff.
You knew it was a rhetoric question; she was talking to herself to pass the time. So you didn't answer, just continued to stare at your hands that were folded in your lap. And you didn't dare to look up at her. Right now, the last thing your mother would want to do is stare into your eyes—eyes that were no longer golden but a (e/c) colour.
Flashback
"I don't understand, is there something wrong?" you asked after your mother's outburst.
"Yes there is!" she shouted. "Your eyes, they've changed!"
Your mouth gaped open in shock as you reached down to your phone and swiped it to camera mode. Switching the direction, you stared back at yourself, expecting to see golden eyes. Instead, there were (e/c) eyes looking back at you—(e/c) eyes that now belonged to you.
"I...I don't understand," you uttered.
"Answer me truthfully," your mom began, taking a seat at the table. "Who were you with today?"
"Jungkook," you replied, sinking back into your chair.
"And did anything unusual happen today? Something completely abnormal that you just couldn't make sense of?"
The crying incident immediately popped into your mind. You began to feel sick to your stomach. "Yes. After he left I began to cry, but I didn't feel upset."
Your mother's eye twitched, her mouth set in a straight line. She exhaled heavily through her nose and sat up straighter, folding her hands in front of her on the table.
"I'm going to explain to you what happened, okay?" Your mother let out a sad sigh and cast her eyes downward. "When your brain registers that you have fallen in love with someone who isn't your soulmate, it performs a sort of cleansing ritual, if you will. Your eyes fill with water and the tears work to wash away the golden colour of your eyes, leaving behind your natural eye colour. That colour has been hidden there all along, and now that the gold has been washed away it's visible for the world to see."
"So...so that means..."
Your mother nods her head. "You've fallen in love with Jungkook."
"So that's what his text meant," you mumbled to yourself. However, your mother's ears caught it.
"What text?" she demanded, gaze sharp again.
"He said he needed to talk to me about his eyes," you replied.
"I can't believe this. If you were to fall for him alone that would be one thing. But for both of you to fall for each other?" Your mother leaned back into her chair, pinching the bridge of her nose.
"I'm really sorry, mom. I didn't mean for this to happen," you said softly. Your mother brushed you off with a wave of her hand.
"What's done is done; nothing we can do about it now. But I'm bringing him in so I can chat with the both of you," she said, standing from her seat. You moved to get up too, but she put out a hand, signalling for you to stop. "I just...need a moment."
You swallowed the lump in your throat and nodded, even though her back was turned to you. You watched her exit the kitchen and go down the hallway, leaving you alone, a bitter taste in your mouth. You felt guilty, and you knew you shouldn't. You couldn't help that you fell in love with Jungkook. But you knew that your mother was disappointed. What scared you the most was she may never look at you the same—she would only see a daughter that couldn't live up to expectations; a failure.
