Mali forced Koa to ride her back through the sewers for god knows how long.
"Is this really necessary?" Koa protested.
"Yup. You clearly don't know your way around and can't walk straight without falling. You're useless down here."
Koa knew that was to cover up her real intention. She was reducing the stress on her wounded knee. Koa silently thanked her friend. But she knew that Mali could go from kind to badass in seconds.
As they walked blindly through the sewers, Koa wanted to know, "Who're we even meeting? I don't know anyone! And even if I did they probably want to kill me!"
"Do you really think that's my intention?" Mali retorted.
Koa heard the hurt in Mali's voice and stayed silent.
Mali spoke up again, "Okay. So here's the deal. I tell you and you don't chicken out on me okay?"
Koa hesitated, but then nodded, "Fine. I'll stay." She really wanted to run away.
"It's someone you know. Not personally, but you have some connection to them. A very personal one."
Koa was confused. What kind of personal connection could she possibly have with anyone? Her mom was dead and she didn't remember any relatives. This was why she hated listening to Mali. She was never clear with her intentions—good or bad. She pondered that thought as she felt Mali stop.
"Why're you stopping?" She asked.
"We're here," Mali said. She was clearly nervous.
Mali climbed the ladder into an alley followed by Koa. When they finally got out Koa noticed a hooded man in the corner. He raised his head and lowered his hood. Koa turned to see Mali gulp. Not a good sign. She turned back as the man opened his mouth. Her eyes widened with a mix of fear and anger as he introduced himself.
"Hi Koa. It's been a while, hasn't it? Did you miss me?" Said her father.
