"Alright! We're here!" Mali said, dragging Koa back to her senses.
June and Koa stared at each other, Mali, and then at the ladder leading up to the surface. Koa and June had the same idea: Let's hope she didn't mess up this time...
Mali pouted when she saw the looks, "Hey I was sorry wasn't I! And I actually have an idea this time! C'mon, follow me."
She let Koa off her back and led them up the ladder into a busy street. They followed Mali who confidently walked up to the police station.
"What're you-" Koa was interrupted by the sly grin on Mali's face. She definitely had something up her sleeve. Walking up to a police station was one thing, but declaring your name was a new level coming from her Mali. Mali smiles at the two as she waited for something. Or someone.
A young girl in a police uniform walked over to the group. She gave Mali a hug before leading them to an alley. As Koa limped over to the alley, she was starting to see why alleys were so popular. You could get some well needed privacy.
"So what is it this time?" The girl asked.
"Well I would say a street thug, but this guy's worse," Mali said.
"How bad? Murder bad?"
"Annie bad."
At the name, the girl's eyes widened twice the size.
This is getting old. Koa thought to herself.
"So who is she?" June asked Mali.
"Oh, this young woman is my younger sister! Her name's Lena and she's the best!"
"Only because I haven't tried to put you behind bars! I've been ignoring you, but I don't know what to do if you get involved with her."
"Well this girl here is that woman's daughter so we kinda need your help."
Lena shrugged, "I don't know what to say. I would think that there'd be someone behind that woman because when she died, there wasn't much chaos on the streets. Things were pretty calm."
"So you're saying that even Annabelle had a boss?" They were all confused at this point, even Koa.
"I'm afraid so," Lena said, "There's someone behind all the gangs and he's got the reigns of this whole show. How bout this. I'll get you guys a place for the night and we can work on this tomorrow. We have extra clothes and I have extra rooms so you guys can get settled. You look like you just came out of the sewers so I'm sure you guys would like to take a shower." She looked over at Koa's leg. She had noticed that she'd been limping.
"What did you expect? We ran away from a crazy father who is possessive about his daughter to the point he pulled out a knife. I didn't want to know what he was going to do with that so I got us out of there."
Lena looked at them in horror, "You poor things! Possessive father's can be scary. I've dealt with too many of them in the past. Well let's get to my place and you can tell me everything!"
Koa looked at Mali worried. How could she just trust this woman? She knew it was Mali's sister, but they were so different that it made Koa anxious. Mali, seeing the uncertainty on Koa's face, shook her head and gave her an encouraging smile that said everything would be alright.
