The afternoon sun shone brightly onto the town below, the sun was like an overwatching hawk soaring high above inspecting the event as it passed on throughout the day. Nottinghams town square was full of people, awaiting to hear the Prime Ministers annual yearly speech.
Every year it was the same. Every year the Prime Ministers car would be guided along via an armed escort and the square would hold an enourmous crowd all wanting to get and glimpse and see what the Prime Minsiter had to say this year. Before being submerged within the rest of the crowd or ordered to move back by the line of security officials. Craig Beaseley was one of the many bodies that formed the overwhelming sea of people. He was always at these speeches, out of respect. He had been former friends with the Prime Minister throughout school and college. They both then went about their own seperate ways. Craig, the military, and the pm well he became a politician and a good one at that.
All of the people were talking about what the topics of the speech would be this year. Probably the on-going depression Craig thought. The Pm had solved many problems over the years, the bad relations with Russia had been resolved. But his methods of dealing with the depression has been somewhat ineffective of late. Craig was keen to see what his former friend was prepared to do this year.
Further down Bodon street. Craig could just make out the Prime Ministers convoy. He took a sip of his espresso and made his way slowly forward through the mass of bodies to get a better look. The convoy itself was made up of seven vehicles: Four standard issue police cars and two police landrovers which Craig predicted wold be the armed escort due to the kevlar armour and the riot gear he could see them wearing. Then there was the black limosuine, in the centre of the escort. The limo had blacked out windows Craig thought there would be more armed police in the limosuine with the pm to ensure maximum security.
The limo pulled up next to the main stage. Televsion crews and journalists all stormed towards the stage. Cameramen were postioning themselves at different angles of the stage and the rest of the media crews swarmed inward all wanting to get a bit of the action but were halted by security. That didn't stop one journalist however she ducked through the line of policer and managed to get a few pictures from her camera before securty grabbed her and dragged her back through the crowd and into a police car. Bluddy media, Craig thought always the same. Like Vultures to a corpse the media continued to home in.
The door of limosuine opened for a fraction of a second the sqaure was deadly silent. Suddenly it erupted in cheers and cries. Craig was just about to take a second drink out of his espresso cup when a man barged passed him knocking Craig sideways. Craig caught of a glimpse of the mans features as he and his espresso was falling. The man had what looks like hardly any sleep over the past few days due to heavy bags under the eyes. He wore a long trench coat and had quite scrawny blonde hair which suggests that he was in a rush to get out this morning. Then time resumed its natural course and the man disapeared within the crowd and Craig managed to steady himself and by sheer luck catch the espresso that was just an inch from the ground.
He stood up to see the Prime Minister emerging from the Limo and wave to all of his vast supporters he looked around for the man who barged him before but of course he was lost within the sea of people. As the Prime Minister took centre stage and the armed police took up positions around the stage the crowd fell silent once more. The Prime Minister coughed into the microphone and began his speach.
" I thank you all for coming here on this most wonderous of days" He said as Craig moved further on to get a better look. " Today is a special day unlike no other, one day which will change the course of history for this gracious country. Today I and my collegues in London. Shall plan to rid the country from the vile grip of the depression which plagued us for so many years. But we cannot do this task without your cooperation. We know that you have all been affected in this troubled time..." Craig turned around and looked on throughout the crowd. All of the people was listening the this man fixated on his words. A small event though caught the glimpse of Craig through his peripheral vision. The strange man that barged into him previous was pushing past members of the crowd so briskly and controlled. He was heading closer toward the stage. Craig edged past along the crowd, " Today will be a day to remember folkswe will make this time into a time of prosperity, by the end of the year we will have no depression, no unemployment but what we will have is prosperity and world peace as peace negotitations will take place throughout the coming weeks with the Russian's" and with that the crowd erupted in cheering frenzy halting the movements of both Craig and the mysterious man. " I thank you all again for coming here and for taking your time yet again to listen to me. Thank you"
As the Prime Minister turned to go of the stage, panic aroused throughout the square. The crowd changed swiftly from a cheering frenzy to a scared and uncontrollable escape from the scene. Craig saw and heard it long before the crowd did. The sound of a gunshot.
