There was a whole lot of noise on the phone, which I hadn't really expected from Harriet, but I soon realized that it was because she and Mason were... arguing? The fact they were arguing at all was a spectacle in itself, since they rarely ever fought over anything, as far as I knew, but I just couldn't help but laugh at the reason. It sounded like Mason didn't want her to call me.
Why on earth not?
It took her a minute to get him to shut up and finally return to the call. "S-sorry, Jackson. Your brother was being annoying."
"Tell me something new."
"Be careful what you wish for..." she muttered. "I have something to t-tell you, actually, and I—"
"No, don't tell him!" Mason yelled in the background.
"Shut up! You don't have any right to make demands! I either tell him now or I ask him to come over and you can tell him yourself!" To my surprise, that seemed to silence him, and Harriet sighed deeply, before continuing, "I need your help, Jackson. M-Mason did something... idiotic."
Again, I felt compelled to say I already knew he was idiot, but I let her finish, because she actually sounded serious. Not that she didn't already sound serious all the time, but she sounded extra serious now.
"It's about Kenny."
I immediately perked up. "What about Kenny?"
"Well, uh, I-I don't know if you knew about this— Oh, crap, I don't— Uh... Sorry."
"What? What are you saying sorry for? What about Kenny?"
"Well, I don't know if, uh..." She inhaled deeply and admitted, "Kenny's in love with Mason, and they kissed, and now, Kenny is mad at him."
What?
She had to be joking, right?
Kenny in love with Mason? That couldn't be real!
It was quiet for a long while and I was waiting for somebody to start laughing, but that never happened. I heard nothing. Harriet said nothing. Even Mason said nothing.
"Jackson? Are you still there?"
She still sounded serious...
"Is this a joke?" I asked.
"N-no."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I-I'm sure! I wouldn't joke about this!"
"Hold on a second."
"Okay..."
I moved the phone away from my ear and did a head roll on my bed and slapped my own cheek to make sure I wasn't dreaming, which had my roommate, Nate, yelling from across the room, "What the fuck are you doing, Jackass?!
