Copter's POV
When we reached my manager's office Nanon stepped out of the car and ran to my side and held the door open for me. What the hell.
"Nanon," I said, "I know you mean well, but I can manage to get in and out of a car without anyone's assistance, thank you very much."
'Uhmm...Copter," he said, "I'm actually a year older than you."
I almost said, "So what?" and then I realized that he meant for me to use the honorific of P' on him. I felt that I would upchuck my breakfast if I had to address him as P'Nanon. It sounded so unpleasant to me.
"You can just call me P'Nan for short," he said.
It still sounded ugly to me. Oh god, I'm usually not like this. I'm usually a nice person but there's just something about him that brings out the hostility in me.
When we got close to the door of my manager's office, I found a chance to get back at him. I ran ahead and held the door open for him with an exaggerated sweep of my arm. See what I mean? He really just brings out the mean streak that is usually hidden in me.
Nanon (I still can't bring myself to call him P'Nan) just shook his head but with a smile said "Thank you" to me and entered the office.
My manager greeted us warmly and brought out the documents that had already been prepared even before we got here. It looked like all three of them had already discussed the matter in my absence the night before. They seemed to have taken it for granted that I was going to agree to their plans.
My manager looked at me in disbelief when I pushed back the documents to him without bothering to read them.
"Copter, why are you behaving like this?" he asked. His voice sounded more hurt than angry. "I assumed that you would welcome this idea because it would spike your popularity tremendously, and that is why I did not bring up the topic to you until just now."
"It would be a shame to bypass this opportunity to enhance your career," P'Nan's manager chimed in.
Whoa, hold it right there. Did I just say P'Nan instead of Nanon? I felt ashamed of myself. But then again, I'm starting to realize that P'Nan sounds a little less unpleasant than Nanon. Oh, well...
P'Nan started to open his mouth to give his two cents' worth but I raised my hand to shut him up. He did so and looked down at his hands that were clasped together on his lap. I really couldn't stop myself from being mean and rude to him. Was it a defense mechanism on my part? Was I actually fighting a growing attraction to this guy? The whole universe forbid!
"Copter, please think it over carefully," my manager said, putting on a persuasive tone of voice. "Opportunities like these are few and far between."
I actually did not agree. It was an exaggeration on my manager's part to make me cooperate with his plan.
I sighed. I was aware that other managers would not be as considerate as mine. They would have just demanded that I sign the contract without asking whether I wanted to do so or not.
I took the pen that my manager handed me and with a heavy heart placed my signature at the bottom of the page. My manager came around from behind his desk and hugged me warmly. P'Nan made a move to do the same but I pushed him away. His manager shook my hand vigorously.
