The Ruler of the Forest

I hope you're excited. Rather than exploring the woods last night, I gave you a whole day to rest for a simple reason... today will break your limits or break your spirit." Rea was as excited as always wearing a regular tee and jeans instead of her cosplay.

"I thought it was "Onee-sama" who said take a break for a while." She pouted for a moment but continued in her energetic way.

"Strengthen your resolve and ready your steel because you're Soloing a subjugation with a disadvantage."

"What kind of disadvantage?"

" Your opponent is the Clay Dragon. It's among the weakest dragon species that can be beat easily with the right advantage but you won't have that."

"Is that why I have Hayate with me, to even the odds. I mean I'll need something to help." I scratch behind his ears.

"Mostly, but if you have a tamer ability he can assist you in the exam so this is the perfect time to test it. If you level up a little with him around you could awaken it." I would like to have Hayate with me, with the right skills he can be the perfect balance to cover my strength stats that level up slow compared to everything else.

"So where does it live? And what should I expect?"

"He has a hard body that can't be cut easily except on his underbelly which is usually buried. It attacks are [ Terra Spikes] that shoot out the earth, [ Terra Migration] which allows it to swim through the ground like a fish, and [ Stone Body] which increases defense so well it makes [ Defense up] look like cardboard. It lives in a cave just a distance away from the nest the other day. I know it sounds ridiculously hard now, but after a few tries I'm sure you'll be able to beat it." I guess this is the step over the bunny death circle. Maybe I should try to convince her to find something easier for now.

"Maybe we should try a warm-up. There should be easier monsters near by. I don't know how much I grown over the past few days but..." I heard a rustle in the bushes and Rea jumped onto a tree and looked down smiling.

"This easy monster is..." A bear came barreling through the brush. " The mighty red bear! This 3 ton beast is easily capable to win a 2 on 1 fight with adventurers. A Single bite from this guy could break a oak. Its tough and has the hide to prove bit being able to take a beating. Now blue corner are you ready."

Hayate you ready boy." He nodded and barked at the bear. I guess that connection collar the guild sold me works. Though we can't speak words directly to each other we can feel what each other is thinking.

I draw my sword and use [Air Slash] to get things started and as  the bear charged it brushed off the impact like it was nothing. This was not going to be as easy as I thought. Hayate shot out his flames and though they hit the damage taken barely staggered it. I stopped it using [Sky Dragons Armor] long enough for Hayate to tackle it.

My attack did next to nothing and Hayate's mana shouldn't be able to keep that up for more than a few times. I need to find a weak spot. Luckily he reared up in a roar and expose a recent scar on it's chest. Perfect!

"[ Cyclone Fist]" the impact had an effect this time toppled backwards three times into a tree. It's chest was bleeding but it wasn't dead. Not by a Longshot as I could see it's chest move as it breathed. It slowly got to it's feet and with no hesitation Hayate rushed in at him. I went in as well for a finishing stab, when his body started to glow. Then the bear rolled over to it's feet and my blade didn't pierce. It swung a paw sending me flying into Hayate.

The hit made my [ Sky Dragon's Armor] crack. I got back up to my feet as the bear's wound was closing. Hayate used [ Flamethrower ] again though the bear was caught in it there wasn't a lot of damage, making it even worse than before. The glow has to be some kind of defense buff like [ Defense Up] maybe paired with some kind of natural healing.
