chapter two ; the dragon slayer

"Is everything alright here, Billy?"

I blinked a few times at the new arrival to the scene. He was also tall, but instead of dirty blonde hair, this guy's was brown and fell in messy curls. As he spoke, his eyes flashed at the blonde boy in challenge, and his jaw clenched.

In conclusion, this boy was very, very good looking.

"Uh, yeah Gilbert, everything's fine," Billy (I assume) stammered, causing me to be shocked at his reaction to the other boy.

"Good," Gilbert replied coldly, his jaw still clenched as he moved closer to me and held out his hand.

I widened my eyes, immediately embarrassed by how helpless I looked. Ignoring his hand, I stood up and brushed myself down.

Billy had gone by the time I looked back up, but Gilbert was still stood next to me with an intense look of concern, and something else that I couldn't quite decipher.

My face flushed red at his searching gaze and I quickly grabbed my bag that I'd dropped when I had fallen, hurrying away from the brunette boy.

"Hey, are you alright now? Got any more dragons you need slaying?" Gilbert smirked, raising an eyebrow.

I scoffed but continued to walk way from the chucking boy, calling, "I had it under control!"

"Of course you did!" He replied sarcastically and I rolled my eyes.

It was a moment before he registered that I'd had enough of the exchange and was still heading away from him, at which point he called, "Hey, can I at least get your name?"

I furrowed my eyebrows as I walked, wondering why he wanted my name. Was he going to report me to someone? I hadn't even done anything! Maybe he wanted to know so that he could laugh with his friends about how ugly I was? But then, why did he save me?

"Hey! Hey! Wait up!" Gilbert called again which made me walk even faster away from him. Before I knew it, I was stood in front of Avonlea High, so I ducked my head to become more inconspicuous as I hurried inside.

I hadn't even said thank you in the blur of the moment- Gilbert probably thought that I was some rude orphan girl and hated me by now. Sighing, I took in my surroundings.

The corridor was packed with students and before I had time to react, I knocked my head against a girl going in the opposite direction.

"Oh my god, I am so sorry," I groaned, rubbing my head.

"No, no! It was all my fault!" A musical voice insisted.

I looked up in surprise to see a beautiful girl smiling back at me, also rubbing her head. She had the most wonderful raven black hair and kind, dark eyes that made me want to be her best friend.
