chapter nine ; people suck but at least i have you

I stumbled out of detention with a major headache. I wasn't sure if it was from staring at my Maths homework for the entire hour and a half or the fact that Gilbert Blythe sat behind me and I didn't feel his classic burning gaze on me even once, but I knew that I needed to get some fresh air.

I sent a quick text to Marilla, who was trying her hardest to get used technology so was making me send her at least four texts a day.

I smiled widely at the text, picturing Marilla vividly in my mind as she squinted and tapped wildly on the screen, complaining about how small the letters on the keyboard were.

Already in a better mood, I headed to the place that I had wanted to explore since I had arrived in Avonlea but hadn't had the chance of doing yet- the beach.

The beach was only a fifteen minute walk from Avonlea High, but I made it in half the time because I was skipping, excited and desperate to see the sea.

I could hear the waves before I saw them, crashing against the cliffs with a power that felt both dangerous and graceful before trickling onto the beach. The sand was grainy but smooth and I eagerly took off my vans and socks, leaning my head back in satisfaction as I felt the stones fall through the gaps in my toes.

The wind whistled quietly around me but I didn't shiver; the sun was still out, protecting me with its gentle glow. I ran to the shore, laughing comfortably and abandoning my shoes and bag halfway down the beach before tiptoeing into the shallow water.

I giggled happily as the cold liquid lapped at my ankles, squealing in response to the strangely enjoyable tingling sensation.

"You are magnificent!" I cried into the sky, spinning around in the water.

"Why thank you," An unfamiliar voice joked, and I followed the sound, shocked. I hadn't even noticed that I wasn't alone on the beach, and stared at the blonde boy sitting on the sand silently.

"Hello," He smiled slightly, half amused and half awkward.

"Hi," I finally recovered, hopping out of the waves and going over to the boy. As I got closer to him, I decided that we were the same age. I also noticed that he had a sketch pad balanced on his knees but I couldn't see the drawing properly from where I was standing.
