chapter six ; happy when i'm with you

I opened my eyes groggily on Monday morning, wincing at the sunlight peeking through my window.

I had managed to stay in bed pretty much the whole weekend due to a terrible cold that I had caught from being out in the rain for hours, (although Marilla didn't know the cause, of course), but I was feeling better so Marilla was making me go to school.

Frowning at the blossoms, I wandered over to the cherry tree and gazed at it murmuring, "Why can't I be a tree like you, swaying in the wind with no troubles in the world? Why must I be stuck in this scrawny body, forced to relive my torturous experience from the orphanage every time I close my eyes?"

Letting out a deep sigh, I tugged on a black turtle neck and my dark blue jeans, tying my thick hair up into a messy bun. A few red strands immediately fell from the bun, but I decided that they helped to frame my face so I left them, shrugging to myself.

It didn't take me long to apply a thin coat of makeup, finishing off with a touch of lipgloss. Shoving the gloss into my schoolbag, I made my way downstairs to the kitchen.

"Good morning Anne, will you help me with these eggs, please?" Marilla asked me with a smile, indicating to a pan where she was boiling three eggs.

"Of course," I obliged, going over and turning up the heat.

"Are you feeling better?" Marilla questioned as we sat down at the table, watching me carefully as I gave Matthew his toast.

"Much," I grinned through a mouthful of egg, hoping that she didn't spot the truth hidden in my eyes.

"I'm glad," She smiled warmly and I felt a rush of relief.

"That was quite the cold you had," Matthew nodded quietly, and I offered him another smile.

"It just came on all of a sudden!" I lied, but felt guilty and decided to get out of the house as quickly as possible. I took a dramatic glance at my wrist before I had thought it through, even though we all knew that there was no watch there, saying, "Woah, look at the time! I'd better get going to school, thanks for breakfast."

I ran around the table and gave each of the bemused Cuthbert siblings a kiss on the cheek before grabbing my bag and hurrying down the path.

"Hey, SC!" A voice called and I sighed, picking up my pace. "Anne! You can't just ignore me! Anne!"

Gilbert jogged to catch up with me and put a hand on his heart dramatically, stating, "I thought you'd be happier to see me after you begged me to walk you to school again."

"You're kidding me, right?" I deadpanned, giving him my best 'are you trying to get a slap' look.

"You can deny it all you want princess, but we all know that you can't get enough of me," He nodded sincerely, trying to keep a straight face.
