chapter twenty four ; pine cones and peppermint

A wide grin stretched across my pink lips as I pranced through the kitchen, showering Green Gables in tinsel and fairy lights. I'd convinced Marilla to let me play Christmas music through speakers, and although she tutted at my 'over-excited shrieking', I caught her smile slightly at my enthusiastic rendition of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer whilst pretending to dust the counter.

Matthew appeared in the doorway, his eyes sparkling with renewed health. Grinning, I hurried over to him and wrapped gold tinsel around the broom that he was clutching, singing loudly along to Jingle Bell Rock. Cole had made me watch Mean Girls, grumbling the whole time about how ridiculous it was that I hadn't seen it before; as a result, the song had been stuck in my head ever since.

"Anne! You're getting that rubbish everywhere," Marilla scolded, but she was biting back a smile.

I glanced down at the kitchen tiles, offering a sheepish grin when I noticed the strands of tinsel scattered across the floor in a trail of where I'd skipped around the room.

"Sorry, Marilla. I get quite carried away at Christmas," I giggled, tucking a hair behind my ear. "I think that it's a simply marvellous time of the year!"

I continued to babble on about holiday spirit whilst I collected the pieces of tinsel, my cheeks flushed with the excitement that always filled my heart on Christmas Eve.

Before I came to live with the Cuthberts, Marilla disapproved of Christmas decorations, saying that it was 'a pointless waste of time that detracted from the religious meaning of the celebration.'

However, over the three years of my presence in the Cuthbert household, Matthew and I had managed to insist on an increasing amount of festivities.

This year, tinsel was the newest allowance, the result of a lot of wide-eyes begging on my part and some hopeful smiles from Matthew that when combined, Marilla couldn't even attempt to resist. Although it was extremely exciting to wrap around lamps and the Christmas tree, I could tell that Marilla wouldn't let it be a regular addition due to all of the mess that I was making.

Despite the advancements in the extent of festivities around Green Gables, Marilla firmly maintained her rule of only decorating the house on Christmas Eve. Secretly, I enjoyed the added anticipation that this rule prompted, but continued to grumble about the impressive decorations in Diana's house all throughout December regardless.

My favourite part of the decorations permitted in Green Gables was attaching the blue stocking labelled with an embroidered 'A', curtesy of Marilla, above the fireplace. It was a gesture that I had dreamt about for years in the care home; something about it sent chilling shivers down my spine, making me truly feel part of a family whenever I reached up to attach it to the fireplace.
