A Double Win

At the gallery.

I saw Nate walk inside and he froze when he saw Chuck behind me.

Nate looked at me  "you know, when you called, i thought it was an emergency.Obviously i was wrong. "

Me "we need to talk."

He raised an eyebrow at me. The FBI guy walked inside behind me.

Nate tensed and glared at him.

Me "The FBI knows your dad's in town,and i think he's about to commit a crime. Even worse than fraud or embezzlement. "

Nate "like what?"

Chuck "Extortion and kidnapping. "

Me "Nate, please, just hear him out"

Nate looked at him and nodded.

We were sitting at a table.

FBI guy "When your father escaped to dominica, he could only get his hands on enough money to get himself set up. he should have found a job, reinvented himself. but instead, he lid the way he'd always lived. Now he's got nothing left. "

Nate "yeah, well, if my father's poor, what's the point of us going to live with him?I mean, we don't have any money"

Chuck "but the Vanderbilts do"

Nate looked at him "Yeah, look, why would my grandparents pay us to go live with him when they can't even help us out here?. I mean, they hate my dad. "

Me "Maybe that's why they would guve him money--to leave without you and your mom"

FBI guy "We've been monitoring your father's calls. He's trying to get in touch with your Grandparents. "

Nate "W-Well, i mean, if this is true why did't you just come tell me this yourself?"

FBI guy "we didn't know if you or your mother knew what was going on"

Nate scoffed.

FBI guy "after all ,she helped him escape in the first place"

I looked at Nate "but i told him i didn't think that you would just leave New York"

Chuck "especially without saying good bye to your friends"

Nate looked at him and scoffed.

I said softly "to me"

He looked at me and his eyes softened.

FBi Guy "i'll let the three of you talk it over"

I nodded and he left.

Nate breathed in shakily "this is just too much"

Me "there is still a chance that the captain can get away, if that's what you want"

Then i grabbed his hand "But you could end it all now. for once and for all"

Nate"how?"

Chuck "by turning your father in"

Nate looked at him and sighed.

In front of Nate's apartment.

I looked at Nate "you want me to wait here?"

Nate looked down.

I put a hand on his arm "you're doing the right thing, Nate"

He looked at me.

Hr grabbed my hand and opened the door to the apartment and we walked inside.

The captain walked to us with suitcases "where have you been?Your mother's almost done packing. We have to go"
