MITCH'S POV
My mind began swirling of all the things that the doctor could mean. I didn't want to think of the worst, but it was there in the back of my mind. Jerome holds my hand and I hold it tightly. Glancing at Hart, her face looked drained. Her eyes showed worry and tears looked like they were about to fall. This is all too much for a girl like her. It is too much for anyone to take. Ian stood up, looking at the doctor impatient for his answer. I take Hart's hand in mine, hoping to give her whatever support and comfort I could.
'W...What is it?' Hart stuttered, her voice breaking slightly.
'Remember we did some tests?' He said, pausing as Hart nodded. 'Well, we were reviewing them and we found somethings that cause our attention. And, unfortunately, they were not as positive as we had hoped. We expected your body overcoming your blindness, but turns out it was much more serious.' He checked his paper. Hart's electric eyes spilled tears down her face. Ian sat on the bed and hugged her.
'You have something called Guillain-Barre Syndrome. This is a rare and serious disease that affects your muscles and nervous system. We see it is affecting your legs.' He said.
'And...is there a cure?' I ask.
'No. But we offer therapy and medical care for it which helps a lot.' Dr. Poles said.
'Hang on. You said 'somethings'. What else is there?' Jerome asked, swallowing.
'Oh, yes. Hart has got a weak immune system and her syndrome is attacking it. Mainly, her heart. We are unsure of how bad it is in its current state. However, we do know that it is a top concern. It will be another hour or so to realise and confirm how bad it is.' Dr. Poles said. Hart watch latched onto Ian, crying into his shoulder.
'Please excuse me. One of my patients needs me. I will be back in a minute.' He said before dashing off.
'Crap...' I say and Jerome shows signs of crying so I hug him.
Nobody really knew how to react. Here there was only Hart, Ian and me and Jerome. The others were back at the house. Around five minutes later, Hart was resting her head on my shoulder, tears still falling down her face. Suddenly, Dr. Poles appeared...looking very upset.
'Hello. I...um...have the results and some more information about Guillain-Barre Syndrome. We have booked you in for some therapy and sessions to help you with both your syndrome and your regained sight. The syndrome however has started affecting your legs. We will give you a pack about it and everything you will need. Unfortunately... your heart isn't as healthy as we first hoped. Turns out it is already under strain. And... your life is going to be shortened...' Dr..Poles said and I held Hart tightly to me. Jerome sat on the chair, burying his head in his hands.
'What..?' Hart said, crying again.
'I'm sorry.' The doctor said.
Then, Hart said something that killed me. 'How long do I have left?'
'We reckon, in your condition along with your syndrome, between 3 - 5 years we would be surprised if you made your 22nd birthday...'
