you don't know how beautiful you are

"you're a beautiful human being and don't let anyone tell you otherwise"
— someone who never called me beautiful.

you know you're troubled
when someone comes along and
tells you things that are supposed
to make you feel good about yourself
but you don't.

you don't because of
all those things people said about
you in the past,
the ones that leaves scratches in your heart
and tears in your eyes,
you still remember them to this day.

you remember them so clearly,
the exact words they used,
and you have it latched inside of your head, their voices haunting you every time.

"don't let their words get to you"

you try but you can't,
they don't realize their words hurt
or how deep you feel them
because you know that
even though they might not mean it,
it tears your self esteem apart.
because words are bullets
and their mouths are guns.

people don't realize how deep
their words wound people,
so they play around with them.
you're hurt in every corner of your heart,
but they don't care,
they don't know.

you've been so hurt by the bad
they say about you,
you refuse to believe them
when they mean
the good things they say about you.

because the bad things
they say about you
are permanently latched into your head,
you believe you're
everything they say you are .
so when someone else comes around
telling you otherwise ,
you have no room for their compliments.

because deep down, you know that's not you.
