Ten Years Ago
The wind and rain pelted against her face. The sting of it she never felt. She was used to being numb to the world around her. No feelings, no emotions that's the way life had become for her. And she had begun to like it that way. When there were no emotions there were ties right?
She had once been a very happy and emotionally stable person and in one night that had been ripped from her. No warning...Nothing .That's exactly what she had become nothing a nobody .She was once something maybe even the world to someone but now nothing. He had been her everything and in the blink of an eye that was obliterated. Fate could be a sick sonofabitch at times and she hated the universe .She lit a cigarette ,putting it to her lips delighting in the taste of nicotine something she swore she would never do but in the last few years had begun to rely on. She should quit that she knew but who was it bothering anyway? It was her body .She walked into the crowded bar .She had just got done a seventeen hour writing spree for her next article a drink wouldn't hurt would it? Besides she had time for it to clear from her system before her next article so she would be clear headed .Maybe the next article she would actually do some good to someone. She sat down at the far end of the bar .It was packed tonight .Odd for a Monday, she thought then shrugged it off .As long as the assholes left her alone she'd be ok because she really wasn't in the mood for company or conversation tonight just the ability to sit, listen to the hopefully not shitty band the bar had tonight and get blissfully wasted. She lit another cigarette as she decided what she wanted to drink."Hey gorgeous "she heard from behind her."Fuck off asshole "she answered without missing a beat or turning around. She didn't care who it was or what he wanted .She wanted to be left alone to herself tonight .She ordered a shot and downed it as soon as the bartender handed it to her. She ordered another .That first one went down way too smooth .She downed that one and got up to use the ladies room. As she walked toward the door she felt like someone was staring at her .Shrugging it off she figured maybe the booze was kicking in already.
He had had a day from hell .He hated the days like this. But they were becoming more frequent which was beginning to piss him off. He seemed to end up here more than he liked but then again with the shit going on in his life lately he might as well just go with the flow right? Why not? Here he was in another shitty bar in Beantown.
. Before he sat down he walked over toward the bar to get a drink. He seen her standing there looking distracted and lost. He ordered a soda and decided to say hello. Maybe he could put a smile on her face. She looked like she could use one. He watched as she seemed contemplative and lost in her own thought .She lit a cigarette .Maybe she was having a rough day too .Decision made."Hey gorgeous" "Fuck off asshole "came the reply. He moved away from the bar as fast as he could .Maybe that wasn't such a good idea after all.
Shaking his head. Jordan found an empty corner to sit and drink his soda in .He was a people watcher so he figured if he did it in the shadows no one would see him .He couldn't keep his eyes off of her .What the hell was he doing? She told him off without even looking at him! Was he stupid? Glutton for punishment? Lonely? Crazy? All the above? Something just kept drawing him to her and he didn't know what but if he had his way he would definitely find out. He finished his drink and got up to see what was on the karaoke list. Might as well .He could sing he knew that and it always helped him to relax .He loved music it had always been his escape ."Can I see the song list?" he asked the disc jockey. With a nod the DJ handed him a fairly large book with songs from just about any genre and era from the last forty plus years. He grew up listening to such a varied list of music he wasn't sure where to start looking "Hmmm ...a ballad? "He wondered .The DJ heard him and nodded. "Unless you're drunk singing the other stuff can make you get shit thrown at you in here .But then again, "the DJ continued "If you suck you're gonna get shit thrown at you .Ya better know what you're doing up there man or you'll be duckin and divin shit that I have to clean up later .Either way if you don't do well we both are in trouble." He shook his head as he turned to put on the next song. Jordan just nodded and kept looking at the book his eyes narrowed intently "I won't have shit thrown at me ""Pretty of yourself aren't ya? "An unmistakable voice told Jordan. "Jon ya prick you're late" he retorted giving his brother the "don't piss me off tonight "look that Jon knew so well. He hadn't really gotten here much ahead of Jon but he just liked to bust his balls every now and again, that's a younger brother's job anyway isn't it? He smirked. "You gonna sing?" Jon asked."Duh I'm lookin at this for my health "he retorted. Jon just shook his head and went to the bar in search of refreshment. Jordan thumbed through the book and found the song. This was perfect and the crowd would hopefully love it too. He told the DJ his choice and went to the bar to get another soda. There were a few people ahead of him. This time he asked for that soda to include rum .Liquid courage he reasons with himself. The last two people who sang before him were too drunk to even read the screen let alone sing .Boo's came from all around him .A bottle flew by "You suck !" someone shouted "Get the fuck off the stage asshole " another bellowed out. "I told ya tough crowd "the DJ told him. Jordan nodded "Brutal .Maybe I shoulda wore body armor "he joked as he took his place at the microphone "Here goes nothing he mumbled more to himself than to the DJ.
