She looked at him puzzled. A man can tell when another man has made a woman feel like she's not worthy of anything but pain. Blunt must be his specialty she thought. She wrapped her arms around herself suddenly chilled. What did she say to that? How did she respond? I she stammered I honestly don't know where to start she told him .At the beginning he murmured gently .We'd be talkin all night she joked trying to find the courage to talk about what had happened to her .Should she bare her soul to him she wondered .Could she trust him?
I got all night and I'll listen as long as you want and need me to without judgement he told her as if reading her thoughts. He told her softly reaching over taking her hand and giving it a reassuring squeeze .She nodded quietly. He took a different way than the one they had taken into the city earlier that day. You gotta work early tomorrow? He asked She shook her head I work from home remember? I was thinkin we could go for a drive I have place where I go to think and lose myself in thought .Might help you do the same .Sound ok? She nodded. He pulled into a gas station. Need to get some go-go juice he told her I'll be right back .He went in paid for the gas and carried a bag in his hand. He handed it into her as he reached for the gas cover. She took the bag from him and peered inside .Two packs of cigarettes as well as two bottles of sweet tea were inside. He got back in the car and pulled a cigarette out for each of them .He lit both and handed her one of them. Don't say it he told her Say what? Thank you .There's no need to thank me he told her simply. I wasn't gonna...He stopped her Yes you were and you know it .She clamped her mouth shut as a smile played on his lips.
He drove about twenty minutes more .Then pulled onto a side road. She began to feel her pulse quicken and felt her heart beating as if it was going to beat out of her chest. Her palms grew slick with sweat. Relax he whispered as if there was a room full of people around them. You're safe here .With me .Nothing nor I will hurt you. He promised .There was a small private beach beyond the grass line where he had parked. He opened her door and put his arm out for her. She slid her arm through his .He stopped them and reached into the back seat. He always kept a blanket in the back seat in case he needed to come out here to think .He carried that under his other arm and they walked to the beach. He let go of her arm long enough to set the blanket down for them and reached for her hand, guiding her down on the blanket with him. They sat quietly for a little while listening to the waves of the ocean as they crashed against the sand .It was peaceful. He was right.
Penny for your thoughts he whispered close to her ear. She laughed softly .I know you're in your own head he told her. She looked at him His piercing gaze made her feel as if he was looking right through her to her soul.
Jesus
The short time she knew him how was that possible? Was she that transparent?
She felt his hand on her shoulder .She instinctively jumped.
What? He murmured what that bastard do to you?
He couldn't see her face but he saw her shoulders shudder with quiet sobs.
He was afraid to touch her fearing he'd make her retreat into herself again but he wanted to make the hurt stop for her .To make her pain go away.
Is he why you moved out here? He settled his gaze on her .She nodded partially. Something like that was her response.
He couldn't see her face because she still had her back to him. He wanted her to turn around so he could see her face wipe those tears away but he didn't dare to touch her right now.
She tried to quiet her sobs .Tried to regain her composure. She had sworn she wouldn't cry again over him. Wouldn't give him the satisfaction but here she was sobbing like a baby. She took a deep breath and went deep into thought, he noticed this but didn't want to say anything or touch her in case it triggered something like before. She looked over at Jordan and noticed he was looking at her. He smiled and said "I thought I lost you for a minute there". She smiled again but there was a pain behind her eyes this time. She looked at Jordan and she could see he was genuine when he said he would listen and help her heal. "There wasn't just one thing that happened, it was the entire relationship honestly". Her statement got him thinking but before he could respond she said "I'm not really ready to talk about everything just yet, I hope you understand" Jordan smiled and said "I'll be here whenever you're ready to talk and I'm not going to hurt you like other have, my momma raised me better"
