I woke up the morning before the red carpet event with mixed feelings, this would be my first red carpet event since enlisting into the military and and these events never made me nervous before, but that was because I was always covered my mother's shadow. She was the star of the show, the one the press wanted to focus on. Nobody ever cared about her son while she was there, but now that she's no longer here, everyone will have their eyes on me. If I mess up they will take notice; that kind of pressure to be perfect can be suffocating and in some way I'm relieved that Ah Lina agreed to come with me. I know I didn't really give her a choice, and I feel bad about that, but having her with me was the only way I would go.
Out of all the sons of the Big Four, I was definitely the most reserved. The other three would never turn down an event this big, meaning they were bound to be there tonight. Dealing with all three of them is going to be the main challenge; will I be able to keep my composure around them for that long? That shouldn't even be a question, I have to, millions of eyes will be on me tonight.
At the tailor I got fitted into many suits, while Ah Lina was trying on dresses in the room over. My fitting ended quicker than I expected, once I was finished I sat waiting in the show room for Ah Lina to be finished with hers. As I waited I scanned all the dresses on display and one caught my eye, a long red dress with an elegant cut on one side.
"Excuse me," I got the attention of one of the sells ladies. "Could you have her try this on?"
"Yes, of course, sir." She took the dress off the display and brought it to the dressing room.
If she's going to be standing next to me on the red carpet she needs to look as glamorous as everybody else planning on attending the event tonight. I heard the door to the dressing room open and Ah Lina was peering shyly from behind the door.
"Why are you hiding, let me see," I raised my eyebrows.
"How can I say this? This dress is a little too... revealing than what I'm used to," she looked down.
"Aish, aren't you twenty years old, Ah Lina?"
     "Yes, but-"
"If you dress like a grandma everyday of course you're gonna feel uncomfortable. You're young, it's okay to wear something like this sometimes," I scratched the back of my neck and turned away from her, "I'm turned around so you can come out now. Don't worry, I won't peak." With her being silent I could tell she was still hesitant.
"Ma'am, I think you look rather fine in that dress, you should let him see you." A dressing room attendant tried to convince her to come out.
"Yes, you look so beautiful!" I hear another cry out.
I don't know if I would use the word beautiful- I wouldn't describe the clumsy Ah Lina, that I know, with her thick glasses as being beautiful, though I have to admit she isn't necessarily that bad to look at either- but it sure wouldn't hurt her to wear something more mature and more her age.
"Sir, you may turn around now."
I looked over my shoulder and couldn't help but smile at what I saw, I turned around completely to have a better look at her. Not surprisingly she was red as a tomato, but unlike what I expected the dress looked like it was meant to be worn by her.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" She asked me.
     "Like what?"
"You're doing it right now, you're looking at me funny!"
I chuckled lightly, "I assure you I'm not looking at you in anyway."
"Pshh, please. You don't need to act like such a gentleman. Look at her, she's stunning!" The second attendant exclaimed. She was an older lady, probably in her fifties, which explained her over the topness in a professional establishment like this. "Oh, just look! She's just so beautiful, don't you agree?" She asked me as she smoothed down Ah Lina's hair, but I was too busy admiring her in the dress to answer her.
"Aigo! Look at him, he can't keep his eyes off of you and, you know what, he's not going to be the only man that can't," she came back over to me and cheekily added, "and if you're not careful, other men might try to take your girlfriend tonight." She wiggled her eyebrows up and down.
I suddenly couldn't breathe and readjusted my tie by loosening it a little.
"I'm not his girlfriend!" Ah Lina made sure to correct.
"Sure," she patted Ah Lina's head playfully before leaving us in the room together, taking the other attendant with her.
I coughed to clear the awkward tension in the air. "You should get that dress."
"I don't know, sir. It just-"
     "You should."
     "Why?"
     "Because."
     "Because?"
"Because... I said so and I'm your boss and..." I couldn't meet my eyes with hers, "it looks somewhat nice on you, I guess." I mumbled.
     "What was that?"
     "Just get it!"
She looked disappointed but nodded her head in compliance.
