After dinner I saw her leave from my bedroom window, but she never came home last night. Curiosity kept me up as I wondered where she had gone last night and why she hadn't returned.
My watch read six in the morning. I had had another rough night sleeping and walked downstairs. Now, I was sat at the bottom of the staircase waiting for her.
"She shouldn't have class today, so where is she?" I asked myself. I brought my knees to my chest and rested my chin on my arms.
"Aish, what am I doing?" I messed up my hair. "This doesn't have anything to do with me. I shouldn't be worried, she's just an assistant." I continued to talk out loud.
Why am losing sleep over her? I barely know her. It's probably just because mother wants me to take care of her. Yeah, that's it. That's it alright.
A few minutes passed before I finally heard the sound of the knob of the front door turning. Ah Lina didn't notice me as she stepped inside; she had her back turned to me as she shut the door very softly.
"Where were you?" I asked, hoping she wouldn't notice the concern in my voice.
She jumped back in surprise, slipping and falling against the door in the process. I shot up from where I was sitting to reach her.
"Are you okay?" I asked. I caught her inching back, quietly muttering numbers under her breath.
"1, 2, 3-"
"What are you doing?" I interrupted her counting.
"I-" she blinked twice then continued, "I'm doing what you said and staying at least three steps away from you." She looked up and tilted her head to the side, reminding me of a dog looking up at it's owner.
Her glasses slid down again and this time I pushed them back up her nose. "Good," I plainly said before walking away from her.
Entering the kitchen I grabbed my phone and read the notification on my phone. It was the daily grocery delivery.
"Ah Lina!" I called to the next room. She came running in.
"Yes?"
"The delivery men are here with the groceries, could you go and bring them in?"
"Yes, of course." She bowed.
"And-" I began.
"Yes?" She turned around.
"Do you know how to make coffee?"
"Yes," she nodded slowly.
"Well, after you come back," I rubbed the back of my neck, "could you, ah, make some coffee and bring it up to my study?"
"Yes," she smiled and hurriedly left to go take care of the delivery.

________

Ah Lina, I read the file name in front of me. There wasn't much information on her and the very few that I did find seemed pretty ordinary. There were some things that stood out, though; She was a fourth year student in University studying as a bio-medical engineering major. This wasn't impressive until I learned she was only twenty years old. I found old articles on her highlighting her accomplishments in skipping multiple grades and being the youngest student to attend the University. Some of them stated that she had a disclosed donor paying for her full admission to the school, something others only dreamed of receiving. Her first year there she was asked to join an exclusive engineering team, becoming the youngest and first female to ever to be given a position on the team. I couldn't find anything other than the articles and nothing on her family.
There was a knock at the door.
"Your coffee is ready," Ah Lina said through the door.
I took the file and hid it into my top drawer. "Come in," I exclaimed. Lina walked in carrying a tray and placed it down on my desk.
I watched as she took the cream and carefully poured it into the dark coffee making a swirly mix. She took a spoon and and stirred before placing the cup onto my desk and stepping back.
"Enjoy."
I took in the scent and aromas of the coffee. It immediately reminded me of the smell I used to wake up to every morning when as a little boy; mother would wake up early in the morning just to brew some coffee before locking herself away in her lab. I closed my eyes and took a sip. I opened them when I heard a small laugh.
"What?" I questioned.
She covered her grin with her hand but it still showed in her eyes.
"What is it?" I asked again.
She pointed to her lip and looked at mine. I quickly reached into my drawer for a mirror and pulled it in front of me. I wiped my face clean and put the cup of coffee to the side.
I was glad to see that Lina had noticed the clothes I placed on her bed and had changed into them. I could stand to be seen with her this way at least.
"Ah Lina, do I have anything scheduled for today?"
"No, master," she replied.
I got up and head towards the door. "Follow me," I ordered.
"W-where are we going?" I heard her say, but I ignored her. I took out my phone and dialed the chauffeur. "Bring my car to the front."

_______

"Get in," I held the car door open for her. She hesitated a little before sliding in. I closed the door and walked around to the other side and behind the wheel. I haven't driven in years and it felt great to be back behind the wheels.
I couldn't contain my excitement as I gripped the steering wheel. "I'm back," I smiled to myself. "Buckle up," I told Lina.
She put on her seat belt and looked at me. "Ready?" I asked. She gave me the thumbs up and I put the keys into the ignition and started up the engine. The sound of the roaring engine was like music to my ears. I put it into drive and drove out of the driveway down the hill and waited for the gates to open to let us through.
Once I entered the main city streets, it was no longer quite, the sound of the bustling city surround us.
"Where are we going?" She asked.
I shrugged, she let out a great sigh and looked around the car.
"Like my car? She's actually my most prized possession."
"She?"
"The car," I kissed my teeth at her.
She started nodding, "Yeah, it's pretty nice, I guess." It? Was she trying to get fired? The disrespect.
"You guess? These seats we're sitting on, they're premium leather. She was specially made over seas with a v-12 engine design; a true beauty. Unlike you, she can't be replaced, so you should watch what you're saying."
"What a shame..." she shook her head.
"Pardon?" We came to a red light.
"It- I mean she had the potential to be raced by a professional racer, but instead she got stuck having you as an owner. This is probably the first time this poor thing's gone out in years."
"Yah," I hit the steering wheel,"Why are you defending the car?"
"Because we both have to work for an arrogant fool," she said bluntly. "Isn't that right?" She said sympathetically while hugging her seat.
The light turned green and I hit the gas. "You're lucky you were born a girl because-"
"You'd hit this precious face?" She put her hands under her chin, her full aegyo on display.
She was getting on my nerves. "Don't do that- you look dumb." She rolled her eyes and turned her body away from me and pressed her face up against the window. "Yah! Get you're face off the window," I yelled.
She gave me an annoyed look and leaned her head against the side of the door instead.
"What am I going to do with you?"
I checked the time, 7:48. This was when Chef usually got up to prepare breakfast. I took a quick glance over at Lina who still had her back facing me.
"Yah, Ah Lina, do you want something to eat?" I asked. She didn't respond.
"Hey," I nudged her with my elbow.
She jolted awake.
"Were you asleep?" I questioned in true disbelief.
She blinked twice and avoided making eye contact with me, "No." She gave me an innocent smile.
"Sure," I kept my eyes on the road. "Anyways, I asked if you were hungry."
"Why? Are you hungry, master?"
"Did you not just hear me? I asked you."
She thought about it for a sec. "Now that I think about it, I feel hungry."
Did she seriously have to think about being hungry? "Is she really a genius?" I said under my breath.
"What was that?" She asked.
I shook my head and put in directions to the best breakfast spot in all of Seoul.
