I looked at myself in the mirror and barely recognized the girl staring back at me. My usual messy hair was straightened and pinned up in an elegant twist, all previous existences of any blemishes were covered flawlessly by makeup– a process which took over an hour and a half sitting in front of the mirror with a makeup artist to accomplish. My skin porcelain like, my cheeks rosy and bright, my lips delicately adorned with the perfect shade of red and for the final touch my thick rimmed glasses replaced by a pair of contacts.
The more I stared at myself the more the line between me and this new version of me blurred, completely erasing my past identity. I hated to admit it, but I liked this version of me better. This girl in the mirror was mature and strong, she looked like someone who knew what she wanted and would achieve it under any circumstances. She was everything I always wanted to be. She was an adult. Unlike me, she had everything together and knew that we can't seek refuge in our adolescence forever, eventually we all have to grow up– something I'm still having trouble accepting. I mean take a look at me. A kid. That's what I saw.
I hear a knock at the door which takes me away from my thoughts. "Yes?"
Soojin walked in holding a black box in her hands, "Master wants you to wear these tonight." She opened up the box to reveal giant diamond ear rings and a matching necklace covered in tiny little rime-stones.
"Woah," my amazement slipped from between my lips. I carefully took the necklace out and admired its absolute beauty in my hands. "Are these-"
"Real? Master knows better than to give a woman fake diamonds. His pride wouldn't let him anyway," she chuckled and took the necklace from me and put it around my neck. This necklace matched with the one already around my neck.
Soojin went to take it off but I stopped her, "No, keep it on." Jungkook wouldn't be happy if he noticed it off.
She smiled and looked at me through the mirror. "You look quite pretty, my lady," she complemented and I blushed. I wasn't used to receiving them and so I never really knew how to react whenever I did. "Now," she patted both my shoulders, "Young master's waiting down stairs for you, looking quite dashing himself, you better get the move on young lady," she teased.
I smiled and got up to leave, but nearly toppled over. I guess even under all the glitz and glam, I can't hide my clumsiness. I hope the world has some mercy on me tonight when I walk the red carpet, I really can't afford to taint Jungkook's reputation. Tonight's event is kind of his first official public event as the new CEO of Jeon Inc. and there would be thousands of eyes on us. Soojin helped me up and walked me to the stairs.
"Watch your step, my lady. Master should be waiting down stairs for you," she said softly.
I looked down and saw Jungkook waiting for me at the bottom of the stairwell. When he noticed me he fixed his stance and looked up at me with what I could only describe as the most subtle yet heart melting smile I've ever seen on a man. I froze as I felt my heart speeding up and the blood rushing to my cheeks. I felt like I finally understood all those girls in high school who used to idly gawk at "cute" boys all day. If I had to be honest there was nothing I found appealing about guys who couldn't even write down the quadratic formula by memory.
In my opinion, Jungkook was smarter and much better looking than all those guys combined. I've never met a man quite like him and that made him even that more intriguing. His choice of wearing a turtle neck under his suit jacket gave him the kind of look that said "Not looking to impress anyone," while still making him appear nice and chic.
I slowly made my way down to him and I couldn't keep my eyes off him. I probably should've been watching my feet, it was a miracle that I didn't end up tumbling down the stairs.
"Hi," he said.
"Hi," I smiled.
"You ready?" He asked nervously.
I nodded.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
Crap. Come on, Lina. Get a hold of yourself.
"Like what?" I tried to play dumb.
He looked at me for a second. "Don't act weird tonight. Let's go, the driver's waiting for us outside."
I nodded and followed him out. I was surprised to see a full blown limo waiting for us. The driver opened the door up for us and Jungkook helped me with my dress as we got in. The inside of the limo was everything I imagined it to be like. The soft leather seats, leg room, and lights to set the mood, all accompanied by fancy drinks with tiny umbrellas in them. I was absolutely captivated.
I heard Jungkook chuckle across from me.
"What?" I asked, curious to why he was.
"Nothing, it's just funny how you're amazed by the smallest things."
"Well excuse me. Not all of us are born with limos and personal drivers. I'll try to limit my excitement for tonight." I pretended to be offended, but his comment didn't really bother me.
"Good." He crossed his arms and turned his attention out the window.
For the rest of the ride we sat in silence. After spending these past couple months with him, I've gotten used to this silence between us. I've learned that this was just Jungkook being Jungkook— quiet, closed off and reserved. He always looked like he was contemplating something deep and I bet being in his situation would give any man a lot to think about. Despite really wanting to know, his private thoughts seemed like a sensitive subject so I never brought them up.
I looked out my own window and wondered how I had even gotten in this position. I never in a million years would've thought I'd have the opportunity to sit in a limo with a man of Jungkook's status and walk a red carpet. Was it luck? Or was this whole thing too good to be true?
I thought back to the day I met Dr. Jeon, the day my life changed. It was a week after my mother's death and I had been crying outside in front of the university. I remember I had been too distracted that day and completely messed up all the data the team had collected over a course of a month. That incident on top of my mother's death resulted in me running out of the lab and incidentally lead me to Dr. Jeon. She found me in a devastated state, picked me back up, brushed the dust off my shoulders and gave me an opportunity of a life time. I still wonder to this day what she saw in me that day that made her give me the job as her lab assistant and now I would never have the chance to ask her. If only we had both known the outcomes of the future, I would've ask Dr. Jeon more about herself. Maybe I would've known about Jungkook earlier.
I was so caught up in my thoughts that I didn't notice the car had come to a slow stop. I took a better look outside and noticed we had arrived; lights flashed everywhere and photographers scrambled to take pictures as more and more of elaborately dresses guests arrived. I had the sudden urge to throw up realizing just how many people there were.
I looked at Jungkook and he looked composed, but I knew under that stone calm exterior he was just as nervous as I was.
He pulled a small clutch purse out of the inside of his jacket and handed it to me. "Open it up," he told me.
I took it and opened to see what was inside: an epipen. I looked back up at him.
"Just in case I touch something I'm not supposed to," he said and got out of the car.
I quickly closed the purse and followed him out into the chaotic swarm of lights, cameras and people. When we stepped out of the limo all eyes were on us and I couldn't help but wonder if maybe agreeing to come here tonight was a mistake. Luckily the attention was drawn away from the two of us as another shiny limo pulled up next to us. And as if the world overheard my thoughts on how all of this was too good to be true, out of the limo came out the one and only Kim Taehyung and Min Yoongi. I noticed them right away and, looking at the deadly look in his eyes, I think Jungkook did as well. Right behind the two men came two undeniably beautiful women, one of which I recognized from the articles as Taehyung's fiancé. The one he was supposedly cheating on.
Either from shock or my utter clumsiness, I felt my ankle roll as I took a step forward and I panicked, but before I made a complete fool of myself Jungkook wrapped his arm around my waist and supported me up. Fortunately, everyone was too focused on the other two and their dates to notice my small slip up. I thanked Jungkook and tried to pull away from him but he didn't let go of his grasp. He held onto me protectively and leaned his face close to mine.
"Don't leave my side," his words softly brushed my cheek. My felt my heart drop.
All eyes were back on us, but this time everyone stared at all three of the men collectively. Everyone knew that the Big Three had made their arrival.~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~
