I looked at the group of men in front of me. Half of them were men from my team and the other half were the delegates from America. Ah Li-Nah did as instructed and stood to the side quietly.
"Welcome to Seoul," I said in English. "I appreciate you all for coming here today."
"We don't have that much time, let's discuss the project" A man with slicked back hair and bushy eyebrows said.
"Very well. The Blaze Project, as you may know already, is a project to bring basic health care available to children in slowly progressing third world countries."
"Okay, and how do you plan to do that?"
"Umm," I checked the file for anything that could help me. "We- er, we plan to-"
"Look kid," my heart sunk in hearing him calling me a kid, "when your mother was here she had everything under control. I liked the way she ran things, but now, I don't know if I our company will be secure working with Jeon Inc." I looked down in shame. Look at me. Who was I to think I could just take my mother's place and handle everything? This was her deal, she should be here to finalize it.
I kept my head down as I heard the delegates, one by one, slowly get up.
"Sponsors, we have private sponsors that pay for our experiments who will also be willing to pay the expenses of the project." I looked up. Ah Lina walked over from the side of the room and stood next to me.
"Go on." The men sat back down.
Ah Lina brushed her hair behind her ears. "They have all ready paid for the experiment and we were successful with finding a convenient and efficient multi-purpose vaccine that will help prevent and improve common colds and simple illnesses." She turned around and grabbed the file from me. She took out graphs and statistic charts and passed them down to the delegates.
"There are thousands of reported deaths related to common and easily treatable illnesses in children, especially near the tropical areas. If those children had simple healthcare they could've lived to live long and fulfilling lives. This is something everybody should have access to," she said in perfect English. Despite her accent, the delegates seemed to be understanding her for the most part.
"How do you know that this super vaccine actually works?" One of the men asked while looking over the papers.
"We had a private study trial in a small village in Indonesia last summer. Participants of different illnesses all showed signs of vast improvement after a few days of receiving the vaccine," she replied without hesitation.
What was this? I couldn't help but smile in witnessing what was happening. You trained your dog very well, mother.
"All we need is the Pro-Atlantic Company's contributions to our team in providing the trained staff and doctors that are necessary for this project."
"Excuse us as we discuss our final decision," the man with the slicked back hair stated.
Ah Lina bowed down and stepped back to stand next to me. We both kept our attention faced towards the group of men deliberating.
"I didn't tell you to do that," I whispered to her, still not looking at her.
"I'm sorry," she whispered back.
"Aish, what am I going to do with you? When we get back home, I'm teaching you how you should treat your master properly." I combed my hands through my hair.
She didn't reply. I finally looked over at her and her gaze was stuck on the delegates.
"Starting with the fact that you aren't supposed to ignore your master."
She finally looked up at me and her glasses slipped down her nose. I had the urge to push it back up for her, but she did it herself.
"Yes, master," she nodded her head and we both turned our bodies back towards the delegates.
"Okay, we've come to a decision," the same scraggy man clapped his hands together. This was it. Either my mother's hard work would pay off or back to the lab it goes. "We believe that this could be a big business opportunity for both our companies and will benefit many people around the world. Mr. Jeon, we've got ourselves a deal," he smiled.
I let out a breathe of relief and, standing next to me, I could hear Ah Lina do the same thing.
"Thank you, sir."
"Looking forward to doing business with you," he said bringing his hand out to shake my hand.
A wave of panic rolled over me. I took a deep breath and forced myself to shake his hands. Every second seemed painfully slow and I could feel the palm of my hand starting to itch and crawl. After what seemed like an eternity he let go and I had to control every fiber in my muscles from searching my pocket for my sanitizer.
I walked him to the door, but before he exited, he stopped and leaned over, a little too close for my liking and said "You've got quite the assistant, Mr. Jeon. I would give that one a bonus if I were you or better yet, I might just take her for myself," he laughed out loud.
I looked over to where Ah Lina was waiting patiently by the conference desk. I guess, it was all thanks to her that we got this deal. Mother would have been proud to see that her loyal dog got her the deal worth working for.
I laughed with him until he finally left the conference room. I quickly shoved my hands into my pocket and pulled out my sanitizer, aggressively rubbing my hands together thoroughly.
"Much better," I sighed. I looked over to Ah Lina. "You don't have to keep a straight face anymore, I know how much this has to mean to you. You worked as hard on this as mother did. She would've been glad."
A small simple smile spread across her lips and I could tell she was holding back tears.
"Thank you for today."
"Of course," she had her head down.
"I really mean it, thank you. I'm obviously still new to this whole thing and I just- thank you for doing what you did."
She gave me a sympathetic look, "I wouldn't have been doing my job if I didn't step in for you. My job is to help you in anyway possible, master." She pushed her glasses back up.
I let out a small genuine laugh, something I haven't done in a while.
"What, is there something on my face?" She started checking her face with her hands.
"It's nothing," I shook my head. I checked my watch; it was getting close to supper time. "Lets go home, it's time for dinner." With that, I turned and left the room.END OF EPISODE I
