--------------------*Present Day*
I looked down at the sheet draped over the dead body I was examining. I pulled back the sheet to see a man in, maybe, his late 40s. He had very light blonde hair that was greying and I pulled his left eyelid and opened it to see he had blue eyes. I opened his left eyelid because his right eye was dented in slightly.
My mind immediately started working and I figured that due to the shape of the dent the choice weapon was a bat of sorts, probably metal, and that the killer was standing while the victim was kneeling because the dent was at a downward angle. This murderer was one sick bastard. He killed his victim execution style.
Just then I felt my phone buzz and I looked down to see it was my sister-in-law. I smiled slightly and looked to my two coworkers and nodded towards my phone. I walked out of the examination lab and answered my phone quickly. "Hello." I didn't hear anything on the other end except crying.
I pulled my phone back to look at the time. It was about 3:30. I was about an hour behind them since they were in Georgia and I was in Texas. It was about 4:30 there and I pulled my phone back to my ear to hear sniffling. "Lori?" I asked and I heard movement and I finally heard her. "Natalie. You have to come down here now." I heard her say sniffling again. "Why?" I asked slightly panicked. I didn't hear an answer but I figured it out pretty quickly. I took in a sharp breathe. "Lori?" I asked as I heard more crying in the background. "Rick got shot." I heard her whisper and my heart skipped a beat. "Is he.... Is he..." I said as my voice cracked. "He's in a coma." She said and I heard her trying to control her emotions.
Thoughts swirled around my head as I thought back to the last time I had seen him. It was a few years ago. I had come down to surprise Carl on his 10th birthday. I stayed for a long weekend and headed back. My breathe hitched in my throat as I started talking. "How's Carl handling it?" I asked and I heard another sniffle. "Better than I am. I think he feels like he needs to stay strong for me. He only got upset when I first told him when I picked him up from school, but he only cried for a minute. He wanted to go see him as soon as we could but we had to wait a little. He was still in surgery. He is out now." Lori said and I nodded.
My brain started going quickly and I knew what to do. "I'm gonna take off from work and get a plane ticket down there as soon as I can. I'll text you when I get the details. Maybe Shane can come and pick me up from the airport if he's up to it. " I said quickly and I heard a 'mmhmm' in response. I ended the phone call and stared at my phone.
My coworker, Adam, came out of the exam lab and looked at me. He put his hands on my arms and I looked up slightly. His eyes met mine. "What's the matter Nat?" He asked me and I sighed. "My... My brothers been shot." I said and my eyes started to well up. Adam pulled me into a hug as I started crying slightly. I've known Adam since I was 23 and I'm 34 now. We met at a party I went to and we found out that he was going to be my new partner. "Is he...?" He asked and I took a deep breathe. "He's in a coma." I replied and I felt his grip tighten around me. "I... I have to go. I need to get down there for Lori and Carl, and I'm sure Shane wouldn't mind having me down there."
Adam nodded and pulled me back. "I'll take care of it. Go Nat. Go take care of your brother. I'm sure the boss will understand." I nodded slightly and ran back into the room to grab my bag and head on out.
I quickly went to my car and drive as fast as I could to my house. I pulled into the driveway and grabbed my keys and opened my door. I dropped all my stuff by the table next to the door and ran up to my bedroom to grab my laptop. I jumped down the stairs and and rushed over to the couch. I quickly clicked the TV on and opened my laptop. I glanced up while my laptop was starting up to see that the world news was on. I sighed as I saw some kind of genetic experiment going on in some weird place in Europe. I sighed and concentrated on my laptop. I went online and looked for the soonest possible flight to Atlanta. I searched and searched for about an hour but the earliest one was tomorrow morning. I was hoping there would be one tonight but now I have a little time to actually see what I was packing.
I set my flight for 7am and I closed my laptop. I sighed and went upstairs to pack some stuff. I grabbed a whole bunch of my clothes and folded them nicely in my suitcase. I grabbed a few other outfits and put them in a duffle bag as my carry on along with my laptop and a few chargers and such. When I was done packing I looked at the clock beside my bed and it was already 1:28 in the morning.
I set my alarm for 6 and went to sleep thinking about my brother.
