Ancient Paladins

Chapter 1 - What's This?

This chapter takes place during season one of Voltron, But everyone knows what started the war. (Imagine the Journal like this but weathered and older looking.)

Lance POV

I walk into the room Allura called us to, and sit on the couch listening to her as she briefed me and the other paladins on what we would be doing for training this week. She's saying something about Coran upgrading the training bots but gets cut off when Coran bursts into the room looking winded from running. "Hey Coran, What's the rush?" I say in attempt to find out why he was running. "PRINCESS!! YOU MUST SEE THIS!!!!" He yells holding up something that looks like a book. A really REALLY old book. The other paladins and I watch as Allura walks over to the old altean man with confusion on our faces. Allura picks the book up out of the elders hands as he now lays on the ground trying to steady his breathing. "What is this?" She says giving a curious look at Coran. "It's...*huff*...your great great ...great.....*huff* .... you know what, lets just say it belonged to your ancestors....." he blows out a long breath finally regaining some of his composure. He clears his throat, "It was one of your ancestors journals." He finally finishes his sentence. I look at him and Allura with one eyebrow raised, "What does it say, Princess?" I ask as the others nod implying they also want to know. The princess opens the old weathered leather-bound journal and began to read to herself. After about a minute her expression changed to a look of surprise and disbelief at the contents. After a minute of her rollercoaster of expressions, I decided to walk behind her and look over her shoulder to see what was written considering she didn't look like she was going to talk any time soon. What I saw in the journal explained why she was so surprised. Even though I couldn't read the Altean language, there was a picture of a human/cat/bird hybrid that looked familiar. Then it hit me. That was the Sphinx. Yeah. The Sphinx. Like from Egypt sphinx. Egypt on Earth Sphinx. My jaw literally dropped. The other paladins must have seen my expression from behind Allura because they began asking me what was on the pages. I just blinked at them and said, "Sphinx...". They all looked confused at first. Pidge seemed to understand fairly quickly because she starts to focus on something while staring into space like she does when she thinks about complex algorithms. She looked up at everyone and said what Allura and I were already thinking, "Alteans have been to Earth...". Keith looked utterly surprised at this information while Shiro gave a look saying that it wasn't impossible. I kind of thought it could be possible considering the Galra were at Kerberos which was in our solar system. Hunk was just muttering something about Alteans to himself the whole time. The paladins all looked at Allura to finish reading for an explanation seeing as none of us could read Altean and Coran was not talking either, but rather waiting paitiently for Allura to explain it to us. Allura finally finished reading and closed the book. She took a deep breath and looked at all of us. She spoke up, "Pidge... you were right.". This gained a few gasps here and there but overall we were just too shocked to speak up. "Alteans have been to earth, but it was thousands of quintants ago in space-time. In earth years it was about six thousand. In space, it was around ten thousand eight hundred." We all thought for a second before Pidge spoke, "Six thousand years ago earth time is around the time of the Ancient Egyptian Empire. Lance mentioned something about the Sphinx. The sphinx was supposedly built around four thousand five hundred years ago. That's about one thousand five hundred years apart. How long were they here?" Allura looked at pidge and then me. "If that Sphinx thing you were talking about was the giant cat with a human head in this book then you were wrong about how old it was. It was made by Alteans in the earth year five thousand nine hundred B.C." Allura continued. "It says here that Alteans were not the only aliens on earth. In fact, Earth was kind of like a mixing pot for aliens from all around the universe. It also says that aliens that your people call 'Martians' are the ancestors of the Galra. They were always a very violent race and loved to wage war on others." Everyone in the room looks confused except Allura and Coran. The room went silent for a couple of minutes until Pidge began to ask questions, "Allura I'm gonna need you to answer some things for me. So one, are humans an alien race that originated from another planet? Two, why did the Alteans build the sphinx? Three, if the Galra are descendants of Martians does that mean that their home planet is still intact and this whole intergalactic space war was started for no reason?". Allura started answering the littlest paladins questions one by one, "To answer your first question, Yes. Humans are also descendants of aliens. Earth was not the only planet inhabited by aliens. The planet you call 'Mars' was a smaller version of Earth almost a replica. There was a large war started by the Martians over the planets Earth and Mars that lead to Mars's outer cores destruction and Earth's inhabitants of humans. To answer your second question, The Sphinx is part of something my father's great-grandfather built to help the humans win the war. It is similar to the black lion of Voltron but when combined could beat Voltron easily, like stepping on a small insect. There are other pieces of it on other planets as well. One piece is on Mars, the others are lost on different planets that the humans hid them on from the aliens that wanted Earth even after the war was over. Your third question is a bit... tricky to answer. While their original planet it is still intact it is a barren wasteland that can no longer support life on the surface. There are still Martians there just under the surface. A couple of elite Martians decided to leave there planet and go to the planet we know as Daibazaal. Eventually, their history was lost and they evolved into the Galra we all know and hate today. The Galra think of Daibazaal as their home planet so no, this war is not pointless. The reason us Alteans still have our history is that our kings and queens have passed this journal down for generations. The Galra elites didn't want their people to know about their true home planet because of disagreements about how to rule their empire with the Martians still on Mars. My father created Voltron from the Image he got from our ancestors in this journal of our older- No, greater technology.". Everyone was silent taking in what we just heard. It contradicted everything we were taught in school and out of it. Then something seemed odd to me. "Princess, how come we don't know about any of this? Why doesn't earth have its history? Why aren't there any spaceships that can travel into deep space left?" I asked in hopes of something being written in the journal that would explain it. "It says that Earth's inhabitants left behind many codes for the later generations explaining what happened. Though it cannot be decoded without the key which was given to the king of Altea when they hid the other robots. They gave it to him because they didn't want humans using the superweapon unless there was a space war, in which case scenario the king of Altea would come help the humans. As for why there are no space ships that can travel into deep space... Most of them were destroyed in the war between the humans and Martians. The rest were destroyed as to  prevent the future generations from traveling into space and starting another war.". Pidge immediately perked up. "That would make so much sense about how historians can't decipher the hieroglyphs. So do you still have it Allura?" Allura shook her head at the little paladin's question. "No, I'm afraid we don't. The king secretly hid it inside the Great Pyramids that were built around the same time and wrote about it in this in order to leave it in the hands of the humans without them knowing." Allura says holding up the old book. Pidge began mumbling disappointedly to herself. Shiro finally said something, "Is there anything else we need to know about this giant super weapon that can defeat Voltron, or about humans, or Earth in general?" Allura thought to herself for a moment before speaking. "Yes, in fact, there is something you need to know. Humans and Martians are actually similar in a few ways. One of them being the ability to reincarnate. Sometimes, on the rare occasion, as each other. The superweapon which isn't named as of yet Can only be powered by the descendants of the original pilots." Hunk suddenly chimes into the conversation, "If it's not named yet can we call it 'Auupega Sili'? It means 'Great Weapon' in Samoan.". Allura puts on a soft smile and says, "of course hunk. We can call it...". Hunk enunciates for her, "Aoo-pay-ga See-lee"(I'm guessing right now because this came off of google translate. Please comment if you know how to say it please.)

"Auupega Sili." she finished. This time Keith entered the conversation, "Is there any chance of us becoming the new pilots of this 'Auupega Sili' Allura?" Allura's face visibly lit up marks and all. "In fact, there is a very good chance of you all becoming the next pilots. Since it was such a long time ago there is a good chance that you all have one or more of the old pilot's blood running through your veins. My father used what little DNA of the old pilots that he could find to give their descendant a better chance than most at piloting the Lions of Voltron but not to where only they could pilot them in case of emergancy. So the only one I'm concerned about is Keith because of how long it took his lion to open up.". As she finished speaking Keith's head lowered a bit hearing the news. Allura noticed and franticaly tried to light the mood a bit. "Don't worry Keith it might just be it took her a little longer to lower her defenses because they had to be tighter than the other lions since she was on a Galra ship.". Keith looked up at Allura and gave a small smile and said, "Thanks 'llura.". Shiro looked at Allura and asked, "So should we go to earth and see what we can do about the Sphinx and her pilot?". Allura looked at him with a serious but a bit of a worried look. "Shiro I want you to know just in case that you may not be the head of Auupega Sili. It depends on what pilots blood is in your veins.". Shiro gave her a knowing look and nodded. "I understand that but I'm sure that no matter who the pilot will be they will do a great job. Be it me or someone else.". Allura smiled and turned to Coran. "Coran set the coordinates for Earth. We're going to the paladins home."
