Today felt different. You know that feeling you get when you just know something good is going to happen? It excites your heart, makes you impatient, and fills you with anticipation. That was me today. Since the moment I got out of bed, I had this nagging sense that something good was coming. Even Shawn's twelve texts—asking if I was awake, if I needed a ride, or if I'd had breakfast—couldn't bring me down. I ignored them, as I usually do. Keeping Shawn at arm's length had been my tactic for a while now, but somehow, I knew today wasn't about him.
And then, just like the universe was reading my mind, I saw him again—Jayden Adelaide Kings. He'd saved me a seat in our morning class, just like he'd been doing every day since we bumped into each other after the pizza place. It felt natural, as though we had known each other for years, even though it had only been a week or so.
"Jane-Tashley Mathews, right?" he grinned, patting the chair next to him like always. His familiar smile was warm, and somehow, it made me feel at ease. We'd quickly fallen into this routine of sitting together, eating lunch, and partnering up for group work in every class. Today was no different.
I nodded, sliding into the seat. "Still Jane-Tashley," I replied with a smile, then added jokingly, "And still surviving all our classes together. Should I be worried that you're not tired of me yet?"
He laughed lightly. "Nah, I enjoy your company. Plus, you make things interesting. You saved my life in History class last week when I had no idea what was going on."
I chuckled. "Don't remind me. You were convinced the lecture was in French."
"Well, can you blame me?" He threw his hands up in mock exasperation. "It's like the professor has her own language."
The banter between us had been so easy from the start, like slipping into an old, familiar rhythm. When we first met at that pizza place, I didn't expect anything more than a random encounter. But after bumping into each other again on campus, things just clicked. Now, I was grateful we had all our classes together. It meant I had someone to share my frustrations with, and Jayden had a way of lightening the mood with his endless jokes.
As we waited for class to begin, Jayden leaned in closer. "Hey, you up for a study session later? My notes look like a child's scribbles."
I rolled my eyes, knowing full well he wasn't exaggerating. "Sure, we can study at my place after class. But you're bringing snacks this time. I'm not feeding you junk food every day."
He put his hand over his heart in mock offense. "I would never expect such a thing! Junk food is life, though, so I'll take care of it."
Class started, and our conversation had to be put on hold, but I couldn't help but feel lucky. Somehow, in this big university where it was easy to get lost in the crowd, I had found a friend in Jayden.
Later that afternoon, after our last class, we met up outside the library. "So, junk food first or books?" Jayden asked with a mischievous grin.
"Junk food, obviously," I shot back. "Let's head to the store before everything closes."
We walked in sync to the campus store, grabbing chips, cookies, and sodas—our typical fuel for late-night study sessions. By the time we reached my place, we were fully stocked with snacks, ready to tackle our study material.
As soon as we got inside, Jayden sprawled out on my bed without hesitation. "Your bed is way more comfortable than mine," he declared, tossing one of the pillows onto the floor and propping himself up with the other.
"Make yourself at home, why don't you?" I said sarcastically, shaking my head but laughing all the same. This had become our routine—class, snacks, and study sessions at my place. Even though we hadn't known each other for long, it felt like Jayden had always been part of my life.
