Lee Minhyuk

The silence in the room slowly grew in loudness, becoming deafening at one point. I sat on a chair adjacent to Mr Kim's bed, staring at random points in the room for minutes at a time as my mind ran wild. From the corner of my eye I could see Jooheon leaning against the wall, watching me anxiously with Hyunwoo, who'd come back from getting stitches to his temple.

He'll wake up anytime from now, was what one of the nurses said after inadvertently dropping the bomb on us. On me.

The bullet was removed successfully. It was a small operation and he'll be able to leave in a couple of days. I sighed, standing up and walking to the window.
Enough time had passed that the sun had disappeared, replaced by the cloudy night sky and a round moon peaking from in between.

I felt a hand touch my waist, and Jooheon's head on my shoulder. I glanced in his direction. "Don't worry, I won't ask how you feel," he said softly. "It won't help anything, so I'll just be here for you, okay?"

"Thank you." I replied, putting my arm around his shoulder.

"Minhyuk," Hyunwoo said carefully. I turned around to him, and he nodded towards the bed. I looked, Mr Kim looking right back at me.

"We'll be outside." Jooheon said, and I nodded, straightening up at the sound of the door closing.
For a few moments, he remained looking at me, before looking to the bright lights on the ceiling.

"How long have you known?" I asked to nobody in particular.

"I guess they called my emergency contact," Mr Kim sighed. "the truth had to come out at some point."

"Was it when I properly joined the department, when I stupidly opened up to you on how I was adopted that one day I nearly killed myself or oh," I chuckled in disbelief. "that day in the ER, 10 motherfucking years ago when you just decided to not tell me that you were my dad?"

"It isn't as simple as that, Minhyuk," Mr Kim replied through ragged breaths. "I..I went through hell and back to try and keep you after the accident. You must not remember or must have blocked that memory out."

"Imagine you died; would I only find out then? To save you from giving me an explanation?"

"No, Minhyuk. I was....I was working on telling-"

"You weren't!" I screamed. "You could have sat me down at any time in the last 20 years of my life and told me 'hey, I'm actually your Dad, here's why I haven't been able to be here for you' but no," I chuckled. "you were one of the few people I trusted, and the one I trusted the longest-"

"How could a murderer keep a child?" He reasoned.

"Never mind."

Every machine surrounding his bed began to bleep uncontrollably as he forced himself to sit up. "Minhyuk, I love you. And I always have."
Then he collapsed back into the bed, the noise from each piece of equipment intensifying as his eyes began to flutter shut.

Before I could even begin to answer or ask for help, a fleet of nurses barged into the room. "Sir you have to leave."

"I'm not-"
