I awoke to a crisp, cold breeze. I bolt up and look around for the source.
"Well good morning Adam. Now that your up, how about helping me wake the other?"
Apparently the chill was from Todd opening up the tent. I'm not sure what he was doing out this early, but I'm guessing he slept better than the rest of us. Im usually not spooked by scary stories, but this whole trip has already gotten to me a bit. I have a kink in my neck from tossing and turning and had one of the football player's elbows in my back. Even the bitter cold made sleep more difficult. Being from Miami, I'm definitely not used to this snow. Last night was the coldest I've ever been. If it weren't for the body heat, tent, and sleeping bag I would've frozen to death. I stretch and turn to my wife.
"Meghan, dear, it's time to wake up."
After I shake her shoulder a bit and notice her stirring around I turn to wake the others. The boys were the hardest to wake up. Alex was the first out of the tent and recording something into a camera. Maybe she's filming a diary of the trip? After everyone piles out of the tent we take it down and start packing up.
"Okay everyone, we have another full day of hiking and we will camp once or twice more before reaching Winter. The more we hustle, the more time we have to explore the town."
Meghan grabs my hand and turns to me. She looks a little pale and worried.
"Do you think the story Jake told last night was true?"
"No honey. He was just trying to scare us. Stuff like that doesn't really happen."
"Then why do you think the town is abandoned? There's got to be something off there."
"Maybe it was too cold and they all got up and decided to go home to Florida?"
She pushes my shoulder slightly and giggles. At least I was able to make her smile.
