The girl in the attic
Chapter 9
Preston's POV
I searched everywhere I could think of but Katie was nowhere to be found. I started with the obvious places wanting to rule them out and then set off into the woods. It was after six pm when I finally gave up and headed back home.
I took a quick shower before changing into some slacks and a t shirt and then headed downstairs for dinner. My aunt and uncle were actually home and insisted that we all sit down around the table to eat. I thought this to be a bit weird coming from them but later found out the real reason for our family dinner. My parents had phoned to find out how things were going and because they haven't really talked to me since I moved in they didn't have any answers for them. They told them that they've been really busy and that everything was fine but was obviously fishing for information so that they can be prepared the next time my parents phoned.
They asked me a bunch of questions and I had to lie about most of them, luckily they didn't notice and if they did they didn't really care. After dinner my aunt and uncle disappeared into the living room and I headed back upstairs to my room. I fell down onto my bed and thought about how my friends back home was partying it up right now. I wish I could have been there with them instead of here. It took me a while but I eventually drifted off in a restless sleep. I dreamt of Katie, she was running from me and no matter how fast I ran I couldn't catch her.
I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed but irritated. I tried so hard to help Katie and to find her after she disappeared out of my room. I hope she is ok wherever she is but there is nothing more I can do, it is obvious that she doesn't want my help. I sighed as I got out of bed and headed downstairs to get some breakfast.
When I was done eating I went back to my room and switched on my laptop. I couldn't get Katie out of my mind so I decided to check my emails to distract myself.
I had a bunch of email from all my friends back home so I quickly scanned through them saving the ones from Devin and Sarah for last.
I opened the first one from Devin and it read:
Dude! You missed out on some serious action. The party was better than I ever expected. Oh yeah, I've got some good news for you, Becky got completely wasted and admitted to me that she likes you.
I couldn't help but smile as I imagined finally getting together with Becky, that would really be something.
Next I opened the email from Sarah and it read:
I MISS YOU!!!
This is awful, I couldn't even enjoy myself at Devin's party last night, it wasn't any fun without you. So I complained and complained until Devin finally agreed that he would bring me to visit you! I would have preferred coming alone so that we could spend some quality time together but my car is still in the workshop.
I can't wait to see you!
Love you sooooo much
Sarah
This took me by surprise so I quickly opened the next email from Devin that was sent only a few minutes ago.
It read:
Sarah convinced me to bring her to visit you, I had to beg my parents for cash to fill up my baby but they finally agreed. We're leaving in about an hour so we'll be there tonight sometime. I've got a huge surprise for you but you will have to wait and see! Check you later dude.
I switched off my laptop and shook my head wondering how Devin had convinced his parents to let him go on another trip so soon after wrecking his car on the last one which was only a few weeks ago. We still had two weeks left before school started and I could really use some normal company so I got up from my bed feeling exited and looking forward to seeing my best friend and my girlfriend again.
I headed downstairs to tell my aunt and uncle the good news when I remembered that Devin said he had a surprise for me. I wondered what that could be.
