The girl in the attic
Chapter 28
Preston’s POV
Katie insisted that I tell her my life story so we got in under the covers and I told her everything there was to know about my life. At first I felt a bit embarrassed to admit what a shallow idiot I used to be but as we talked I relaxed. Katie seemed to have really enjoyed listening to my stories and fell asleep in my arms as I was telling her about my eleventh birthday party that was a complete mess.
I battled falling asleep. I was worried about taking Katie to the hospital the next day and what the outcome might be. It was after twelve when I eventually fell asleep and when my alarm went off the next morning I was still very tired. It was only five o’clock but we had to get to the hospital and I didn’t want to take any chances of being late.
It was extremely cold and when I looked out the window the ground was covered by soft snow flakes. I have always loved the snow and I couldn’t help but think that it was a good sign. I took a quick warm shower and got dressed making sure to put on a thick coat.
“H,i” Katie said from the bed making my insides curl with excitement. She really did have a strange effect on me.
“Hi, how did you sleep?” I asked walking over to the bed and sitting down on it next to her.
“Good, I haven’t slept like that in a long time,” she answered smiling at me sweetly. Her face was pale, her eyes tired and her hair standing in every possible direction but to me she was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
“We have to get going so why don’t you get dressed while I go get us some breakfast?” I asked and she happily agreed.
I headed downstairs to the kitchen and made us each a bowl of cereal. Lina wasn’t anywhere to be found which was a good thing because I’m not sure if I would have been able to contain the anger I felt towards her.
When I got back to my room Katie was dressed in a pair of jeans, sneakers and my big jacket that I had given to her to wear when we went to go see her brother. Seeing her wear my jacket and looking comfortable about it made me happy and I couldn’t help but smile when I handed her the bowl of cereal.
“Thank yous” she whispered taking it from me and gulping it down. I wasn’t sure if eating so fast was a good idea but I didn’t want to discourage her so I just kept quiet and hoped that she would be able to keep it down. I quickly finished my cereal, grabbed my keys and then we sneaked out of the house being careful not to be caught.
Once we were on the road Katie handed me the same cd that we played the last time and I put it on feeling happy that she was finally letting go around me. It looked like the cereal had given her some color back in her face but about half way to the hospital she pleaded for me to stop the car. I pulled off next to the road and watched as she jumped out of the car and fell down on her knees in the melted snow. I got out of the car as quick as possible and ran around to see her throwing up again.
I bent down next to her rubbing her back until she felt better and was able to get back into the car. I handed her some tissues and a bottle of water and then we took off again. The color had drowned from her cheeks and the look on her face scared the crap out of me.
