The girl in the attic

Chapter 32

Preston’s POV

Dr. Kremer suggested that Katie stay at the hospital for another day just to make sure that her system was coping ok with the treatment and drugs. She wasn’t happy about it but didn’t argue. I stayed with her all through the day and night not wanting to leave her side.
The next morning after Dr. Kremer checked up on her she was allowed to go home. She was so excited that I had to stop her from running to the car. She was supposed to be taking it easy, not running around.

We stopped at the diner for lunch and then we headed home. It was Tuesday and Lina would be back at the house so I had to sneak Katie into my room again. The following two days went by uneventful except for the fact that Katie was really tired and sick most of the time. I got so nervous at one point that I phone the hospital but Dr. Kremer assured us that it was just the treatment causing her to feel that way.

Thursday morning we got up early again and sneaked out of the house. Katie was scheduled for her next round of treatment and she was really nervous. We made it to the hospital in good time and I waited with Katie for Dr. Kremer. When it was time for her treatment I kissed her lips softly and gave her a long hug to make her feel better.

I had to wait in the waiting room for her again and found myself getting more restless by the second. I hated not being with her. I hated not knowing what was going on. I was about the get up from where I was sitting and go and check on her when a nurse wheeled her into the waiting room. She looked pale and tired but except for that she looked ok. I jumped up when I saw her and watched as relief washed over her face when she saw me.

I took over from the nurse and wheeled her out to my car. Once she was inside I quickly returned the wheelchair and hurried back to my car. She didn’t need to stay at the hospital this time as Dr. Kremer was sure that the drugs were working fine now.

Katie was still feeling very sick so we spent most of the weekend watching movies and talking. The more time we spent together the surer I became of how special she really was. The next Monday my aunt and uncle returned from their tour causing things to become more complicated. It was really difficult sneaking Katie in and out of the house two times a week without being caught. Sometimes after her treatment at the hospital she would fall asleep in the car and I would have to carry her inside.

We had a few close calls and one time we actually had to hide in one of the bathrooms so we wouldn’t be seen. When it was time for me to start school again I was a nervous wreck. I had no idea how I was going to manage to pull it off. I would have to sneak Katie out of the house very early, drop her off  at the hospital, go to school and then pick her up and sneak her back into the house all without being caught or acting suspicious. I had a feeling it wasn’t going to be easy. That’s when I decided that things needed to change.

Katie and I couldn’t go on like this. She needed her freedom and the whole sneaking around thing was really putting unnecessary stress on her. I knew I had to do something to make the situation easier for her.

The Sunday night before school started I laid in bed next to Katie as she slept. I promised her that she didn’t need to worry about anything. I promised that I would take care of her and figure out a way to make everything work. I couldn’t fall asleep so the next morning when my alarm went off I quickly shut it off and got out of bed feeling tired.
