The girl in the attic

Chapter 34

Preston’s POV

After Katie had taken a quick shower and gotten dressed we sneaked out of the house.

“Where are we going?” Katie asked excitedly as I got onto the highway.

“You’ll see,” I said grinning at her. She shook her head and laughed at me sitting back in her seat. The drive took a while like always and by the time we got to the diner where I was going to be working I could feel myself starting to get nervous. What if Katie doesn’t like the place? What if she thinks it is a bad idea?

I shook the thoughts out of my head and got out of the car. I quickly ran around before she could get out and opened the door for her. I held my hand out to her and she took it as she blushed a beautiful shade of pink. I led her into the diner and sat down at one of the booths figuring we might as well get breakfast while we were there.

A waitress walked over to us and handed us a menu while taking our drink orders. Katie wanted a cuppa chino since she has never had one before and I took a coffee. As we sat waiting for our food Mr. Mack the old man that owns the place and gave me the job came over to our table. He shook my hand and then smiled at Katie.

“This must be the girlfriend?” he half asked, half stated.

“Yea, this is Katie, Katie this is Mr. Mack,” I introduced them. She looked confused but greeted him with a friendly smile. He made small talk for a while and then left when the waitress returned with our food. Luckily he didn’t mention anything about my new job or apartment. That would have ruined my surprise.

When we were done eating I took a hold of Katie’s hand but instead of leading her outside to the parking lot I pulled her to the back of the diner and led her up the stairs.

“Where are we going?” she asked as we came to a stop in front of the door.

“Our new apartment,” I answered as I pulled the keys that Mr. Mack gave to me yesterday out of my pocket and unlocked the door. We were only going to be moving in the beginning of the next month when I started working but he thought I might want to get the place cleaned out and move some things in before then.

Katie looked shocked at my words, she didn’t say anything but stared at me in disbelief. I pushed open the door and pulled her inside. She looked around the living room taking everything in.

“What do you mean by our new apartment?” she asked turning to me.

“It’s ours, we can move in the beginning of next month. That is if you want to,” I said hoping with all of my heart that she was going to be happy about it and not freak out. She looked at me for a few second and then her lips turned up into a smile.

“Of course I want too!” she yelled throwing her arms around my neck and literally jumping into my arms wrapping her legs around me.

Her actions took me by surprise but also made me the happiest man on earth. Katie has never acted like that before so I knew she had to be really excited. I laughed as I spun her around and pressed my lips against hers. We kissed until we were both out of breath and I put her down on her feet again.
