" if the morning light don't steal our soul, we will walk away from empty gold "
THE Paris skies resembled a watercolour of blood washed streets to Lena Ricci, who was sat on the balcony of her Parisian apartment. She sipped at the herbal tea in her hands, looking upon the streets of the city with a frown. For two months, Lena and Rebekah had been in Paris, but Lena could feel the change in her bones.
Something was coming, and they would have to leave soon.
"Lena?" came the soft, English-accented voice of her best friend. Lena swivelled her head around to look at the blonde Original Vampire standing at the doors of the balcony. She wore an elegant, red, silk robe, her hair - which was usually down - had been piled atop of her head and she looked as if she was about to go for a bath.
"Bex?"
"You should pack," Rebekah told her, smiling gently at her best friend. Rebekah had raised Lena in many different cities, speaking many different tongues, and meeting many different people.
"I had a feeling you were gonna say that." Rebekah let out a sigh, trying not to roll her eyes at Lena, who let her own eyes scour the streets below them. One hand was curled around the small china cup, the other around the cool metal railing. "So, who've you pissed off this time? The baker? The bank teller? The newsagent?"
"Nobody," snapped Rebekah, causing her best friend's lip to quirk up into an amused smirk. "Well, not anybody that I know of or care for."
Lena let out a breath of laughter, turning her head to show Rebekah the exaggerated roll of her eyes. Rebekah ended up giggling too before she moved over to sit down across from her best friend on the black, metal seat.
"Why are we leaving? Paris is beautiful Bex, do we really need to leave? I'm sick of leaving!"
"I know," sighed Rebekah, resting her forearms on the round metal and glass table that sat between her and Lena. "You've never had the chance to settle down and fall in love and--"
"Bex, I don't need a guy to love when I've got my best friend right here with me, but you haven't answered my question. You're stalling, you're obviously worried."
Rebekah dropped her eyes, staring at her long fingers instead of meeting Lena's strong gaze. "I heard news - this morning when I was at the grocery store - that there was a Luzzatto in town."
Lena blanched. Rebekah had never seen the colour drain from her face so quickly, and the brightness of her blue hair began to drain. Her roots became that dark shade of brown that she had been born with, she was in such a state of shock that she was losing control of her powers.
"H-how can that be?" Lena demanded, her voice a mixture of anger and fear. "They haven't left Verona since--since they slaughtered my family! They have too many enemies, they can't leave, why is one here? Do they know that I'm here?"
Lena's breathing had started to falter. Her chest heaved, her brown eyes grew wide. Rebekah was quick to get to her side and force her to look at her. Lena's eyes had filled with tears by the time she had got there.
"It does not matter if they do, little one, we're leaving tomorrow."
"But where will we go? If they know I'm here they'll follow us to the ends of the earth. I'll never be safe again!"
"That is enough!" snapped Rebekah, straightening. Lena's focus was on her, her eyes still glistening with tears that threatened to spill over slightly tanned skin. "I have spent the past twenty two years protecting you from them, I will spend the new however-many-years doing the same."
"Bex--"
"We're going to New Orleans, you should pack. The flight leaves early tomorrow morning." Lena watched Rebekah make her way to the bathroom where she had drawn a rose scented bath. She let out a sigh, before drowning the last, cold remnants of her herbal tea and followed her best friend to the bathroom. When she opened the door - which Rebekah never locked, for she had no reason to - the red, silk robe was crumpled on the floor and Rebekah was covered by the bubbly bath water.
"It's my brother."
"Which one?" asked Lena, sliding to the floor and resting her back against the cream door. The pearly white tiles were cold on her bare legs - Lena wore more skirts than anyone else she had ever met - but it was a refreshing type of coldness that calmed her down and brought the brightness back to her hair.
"Klaus."
"The hybrid, right?" Rebekah nodded. It was the shortest and quickest of movements, but Lena caught it. "What happened to him?"
Rebekah moved her head slightly so that when she opened her eyes she could see Lena, bright blue hair a refreshing contrast to the stifling cream door. "He knocked up some werewolf girl, Elijah's phoned twice now. Apparently Klaus is willing to give up this child and go on some long murder spree. He's always had a horrible temper, my brother, but it's been three months and I suppose this is as best a time as ever to let you finally meet my brothers."
"You wouldn't let me come to Mystic Falls with you because you were afraid I'd get hurt around them, what's made you change your mind?"
"Now, I have no worries that you can kick their stupid arses if they so much as lay a hand on you the wrong way."
The two best friends laughed together, sharing a fond memory of the day that Lena hurt a boy for touching her arse one day. She had almost killed him, pushing him away so harshly that he went flying back through the window of a bar. Rebekah hadn't scolded her, instead she had taken her out for a celebratory meal.
"To fighting the patriarchy!" Rebekah had toasted, causing Lena to snort Coca Cola out of her nose.
All of Lena's happy memories were with Rebekah, because the Original Vampire had been the only lasting presence in her life. Rebekah was the only person she could count on, the only person she could trust and get close to. She dared not open her arms, her life, her heart, her soul to another, because they would leave her, or she would leave them and she was afraid of such a heartbreaking moment.
But most of all, she was fearful of the day that Rebekah was no longer a key figure of her life.
I know it was a bit of a short chapter but like I just want to establish the relationship between Lena and Rebekah cause they're really more like sisters than best friends
