Wringing my hands as I sit in the car, I look out at the diner in front of me. We'd just moved to Port Railey last month. I'd managed to save up enough money from my last job back in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, enough to cover rent and food for long enough to get us settled in our new apartment.

I'd been working at little diners all over Australia these past 3 years, never staying in one place long enough to get comfortable.
I longed for the stability of a proper home, for me and my little boy Jay. He was the sweetest little 2 year old anyone could meet. I thank god everyday that he wasn't brought up around that monster. He may not have been conceived with love, but him being born saved me from my own personal destruction.

Being on the road constantly was taking a toll on even his little brain though. Not being able to understand why we moved so much. At the same time I can only be thankful he is too young to understand my reasons for moving so much.

So now I sit in my crappy little car, staring Ruthie's diner down, whilst my little boys sits in the back seat colouring in.
Shaking my hands free of nerves I quickly open the door and step out, snatching my bag hastily as I will my nerves to go away.
Closing the door I make quick work of going to the back door and grabbing Jay out. Packing his colouring supplies in my bag, I rest my sweet boy on my hip as I make my way to the front of the diner.

Pushing the door open, a bell sounds my arrival as I walk up to the bright red counter situated in the middle of the room. Red topped cafe tables and chairs sit on either side of the counter.

A young girl with bright purple hair mans the counter, not even looking up from her phone as come to a stop directly in front of her. I take a deep breath, slowly letting it out as I raise my head high.

"Um, hello. I was wondering if a manager is around to speak to?" I ask softly, a small smile gracing my face as I shuffle Jay quickly to my other hip.
The girl glances up, pops her gum and pushes off the counter, and without a word turns and walks away. I see her walking through a set of swinging doors which must lead to the kitchen, and hopefully to the manager and my new boss.

Looking around I see an a few oldies sitting at different tables, reading the news paper, sipping tea and eating cakes. One is even knitting in the corner, making me chuckle softly as I watched knit the bright rainbow coloured wool. A cough grabs my attention as I turn my head back to the counter.

An older woman with graying hair piled on top of her head, wrinkles marring her rosy cheeks and a small smile resting on her face. She seemed pleasant enough with her round face and body.

"If you're here to complain about the food or that your kid only eats gluten free, soy free, sugar free and nut free meals, you've come to the wrong place." she states, a hand now resting on her hip as my eyes widen. My mouth opening and closing with surprise. Making me wonder what the young girl said when she went out back!

With a small shake of my head I straighten up, smiling at the older woman. "No Ms, I was actually wondering about your help wanted sign out front. I just moved to town a month ago and need a place to work. I brought along my resume for you to see aswell as reference letters from previous employers.. T-That's if you still need help" I stutter the last part, biting my lower lip as I realise spoke a bit too quick.

The older lady looks me up and down, then Jay as well. Studying me quietly as I feel my palms begin to sweat with the dreaded silence.

"First.. " she says, shaking me out of my stupor. "You'll call me Ruthie. Second, you start tomorrow, 9am til 5pm. It'll be a trial. If you don't have what it takes or you think you can take me for a ride, you'll be out on your ass quicker than you can whistle. That good enough for you?" she asks, her voice firmer with every word.

I nod my head quickly, so glad I got Jay's daycare already sorted out last week. "Y-yes Ms.. I mean Ruthie! I won't let you down! I promise!" I say, a large genuine smile spreading over my face as I look back at the older woman.

She nods with a smile and point to a table behind me. "Sit down over there, I'll get the little angel something while you get out what I need. Cheese toasties and coffee sound good?" she asks, already moving back towards the kitchen.

"Yes please, and thank you Ruthie!" I say, the last words a bit louder than the rest.

I sit down at the table, getting Jay organised with his pencils and paper before opening my bag, getting out my resume and references and stacking them neatly in front of me.
I can't believe it, I got a job!
This day couldn't get better!
